Job Description

Reporting to the University Building Official, the Assistant Permit Technician provides the department with a first point of contact for clients, working to establish positive relationships with clients and assisting the University Building Official with client outreach programs. Supports the University Building Official office and staff with document management, filing, typing, and scheduling. Manages plan review submittals/tracking and coordinates the required inspections by the department to ensure compliance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code and related fire codes for capital, maintenance, and renovation projects at the University.

Required Qualifications

- Experience providing operational support in a professional office environment.
- Experience in the use of standard office equipment such as phones, computers, and software such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Customer service experience.
- Capable of acquiring VA DHCD certification by the Virginia Code Academy in Core and Permit Technician within 12 months of employment.
- Ability to read and interpret simple engineering drawings and technical specifications.
- Ability to operate independently and multitask.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience in the building industry with a working knowledge of terminology and building codes, professional regulations, and contractor regulations.
- Experience in reading, processing, managing and storing drawings and other documents in an office environment.
- Possess Virginia Code Academy Core and Permit Technician certifications from VA DHCD.

Additional Information

- Work is primarily performed in an office setting with considerable sitting and standing, with occasional bending, stooping, reaching, pushing and pulling.
- Repetitive hand movement for computer keyboarding.
- Normal work hours are 9:00 AM 3:00 PM but work hours may vary to meet management and customer needs.

The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
