We’re currently searching for an Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications to join our Recreational Sports team in Blacksburg, VA to help us in our mission. HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS ROLE
1) You’ll be serving as the strategic marketing and communications director for the Rec Sports team. You will also serve as a leader on the Student Affairs Communications Leadership Council.
2) You’ll be reporting directly to the Director of Recreational Sports while working closely with the Director of Communications for Student Affairs.
3) You’ll be designing and coordinating the marketing, communications and outreach plans for the Recreational Sports department which includes social media, website design, data analysis and visualization, photography and videography, graphic design, press releases, and a wide range of other strategic-level marketing and communications efforts to promote physical activity, well-being, recreation program involvement, membership sales and facility rentals and services. Additionally, you will provide leadership and activation oversight for sponsorships and strategic partnership agreements.
4) You’ll be hiring, training, and supervising professional staff and student employee outreach, marketing and communications team to maintain project schedules and ensure a high quality of work and timely delivery of services.
5) You’ll be maintaining and developing joint partnerships within the Student Affairs division and will be serving on committees and working on teams as needed or desired.
6) You’ll be offered a base compensation package between $60,000 -$66,000 along with a comprehensive benefits package which includes health insurance, paid leave, retirement, tuition assistance, VT discounts, and so much more!

Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, sports marketing, print journalism, media relations or a related discipline.
• Experience developing a strategic marketing plan for a diverse and comprehensive department.
• Extensive experience with social media platforms, social media marketing and management of multiple social media accounts; staying current in social media trends and can use social media tools to engage and promote Recreational Sports programmatic initiatives.
• Demonstrated excellence in communication and customer service skills, both written and verbal.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective, cooperative working relationships with faculty, staff, and administrators.
• Strong time management and organizational skills, working independently with little supervision and as part of a team on multiple tasks and projects; including the ability to prioritize projects and tasks based on workflow and current deadlines.
• Exemplary writing and editing skills, with an understanding of the special requirements of writing for the web, such as the use of keywords/SEO, navigation, and the importance of brevity.
• Experience working with graphic design software such as the Adobe Creative Suite and Canva.
• Experience in publication activities such as writing, editing, designing, and preparing materials for special events, calendars, brochures, fliers, and press releases.
• Ability to network effectively to establish relationships and partnerships that benefit all programmatic efforts and advance initiatives of the department and Student Affairs.
• A strong commitment to promoting inclusion and diversity as aligned within the Student Affairs division and the university.
• Prior experience supervising staff or student workers.

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with marketing, communications and social marketing in a university environment or sports/recreation setting.
• Demonstrated knowledge and/or skills in photography, videography and graphic design strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated knowledge of current media trends, printing processes, and techniques.
• Demonstrated knowledge of website, design, and video editing software and equipment.
• Knowledge using project management software and social media content systems.
