Job Description

Reporting to the Director of Non-Capital Construction, the Manager will provide management of the operation of the Building Trades, Asbestos Removal, and Moving & Hauling shops to ensure that building interior and exterior finishes are maintained at a high level and in-house asbestos abatement projects are managed properly. Position will also be responsible for the supervision and coordination of work for the Pathway Enhancement Shop. Develop priorities with shop supervisors and leads to ensure coordination with building contacts, proper planning, Customer coordination/communication for customer funded and corrective action work assignments. Oversight of work assignments of shop supervisors and leads in accordance with the work order systems Standard Operating Procedures; recognize and resolve issues to maintain productivity of work for assigned resources. Ensure the execution of work order assignments in coordination with fellow Facilities supervisors and with designated University contacts in order that all projects are completed in a timely and cost-effective basis. Perform routine inspections of assignments completed to ensure quality and cost. Evaluates and recommends improvements to current Building Trades, Asbestos Removal, Pathway Enhancement, and Moving & Hauling shops on a continuous basis. Completes the required administration functions regarding work order flow, including data entry into Facilities Work Order System. Ensure shop supervisors and leads are properly coordinating procurement and delivery of material to job sites in effectively.

Required Qualifications

• Considerable experience at the journey level in carpentry, concrete& painting required.
• Knowledge of Moving & Hauling practices.
• Considerable experience with Asbestos Abatement projects at the journey level and must possess a 40 Hour Asbestos Abatement Supervisor Certificate.
• Strong supervisory skills with demonstrated ability to plan/schedule the work of others required.
• Ability to lay out new construction, interpret drawings and blueprints, prepare cost estimates and to interact with diverse members of the University Community necessary.
• Ability to develop and interpret designs for projects to be completed in a commercial type cabinet shop.
• Ability to communicate with customers contractors & Contract labor.
• Ability to safely and frequently move and handle heavy objects weighing 50 pounds or more; ability to maneuver materials up and down stairs; ability to climb and work from elevated work stations such as ladders and scaffolds; ability to work for long periods of time standing, walking, reaching, bending, pushing/pulling; ability to communicate effectively, have good teamwork skills, and be able to understand, comprehend and follow directions in the workplace.
• Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.
• May be required to work additional hours/shifts to meet the needs of the department.
• This position is designated as Emergency Personnel.
• Must be available as situations warrants for response to after hours and weekend trouble calls and/or weather events.
• Ability to Communicate with Facilities EHS & University EHS and other stakeholders.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and will be required to operate a motor vehicle daily

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in a large commercial or university setting.
• Knowledge of University and State purchasing procedures.
• Experience using HokieServ or comparable CMMS system.
• Previous experience with various University computerized systems such as HokieMart, Hokie SPA, & Page Up, and the Leave & Time Worked Reporting System.
• Knowledge of commercial roofing systems
