Job Description

The Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine seeks an experienced and motivated Research Laboratory Technician. The successful candidate is expected to support the College of Veterinary Medicine research, teaching, and clinical areas by doing biomedical disease research, including initiating and carrying out virology experiments and assays involving nucleic acid sequencing, cell culture, and laboratory animals. The research will focus on mosquito-borne viruses such as Zika virus and chikungunya virus, and respiratory viruses like SARS-CoV-2. This person is also expected to compile and analyze the resulting data according to specific instructions from the principal investigator. The position will involve routine laboratory duties and maintenance of the lab. A one-year commitment to the position is required. After one year, the opportunity to extend the position is dependent upon available funding and work performance. Furthermore, depending on performance, possible transition to graduate school will be highly encouraged and supported.

Required Qualifications

BS or MS in microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or related field; previous work experience in a research laboratory setting; experience using word processing and spreadsheet software; knowledge of molecular biology and infectious diseases; ability to learn new procedures; strong organization skills; self-motivated, high initiative, hard hardworking, and proactive to get things done without being told; ability to assume responsibility for your work; ability to work with more than one ongoing project simultaneously; excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and decision making.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience performing virology, molecular, or cellular assays on nucleic acids and proteins such as cell culture or PCR; previous experience managing laboratory operations including budget responsibilities and ordering supplies; previous experience performing laboratory experiments and procedures involving laboratory animals or sequence analyses.
