Job Description

Under the broad direction of the vice president for information technology and CIO and reporting to the associate vice president for IT governance, planning, and strategy, the enterprise architect works to enable university and IT leaders to make investment decisions that balance and prioritize current operational demands, disruptions, and opportunities with the longer-term strategic vision of the division, in alignment with the institutional strategic plan.

The enterprise architect provides technology guidance, road maps, principles, standards, and best practices. Work includes collaboration within and outside of Virginia Tech’s Division of IT to understand requirements for functional capabilities, how those requirements are served by IT services and infrastructure and how support for those capabilities is supported by the IT strategic roadmap.

This position is located out of the Blacksburg campus and is eligible for a hybrid working arrangement.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in computer science, information systems or related discipline, or bachelor’s degree with training and experience that would equate to a master’s degree.
  • Demonstrated experience in multiple, diverse technologies and processing environments. 
  • Knowledge of all components of holistic enterprise architecture, business re-engineering principles and processes, and basic knowledge of financial models and budgeting.
  • Proven experience as an excellent communicator with the ability to articulate complex ideas in easy-to-understand terms to all levels of management, including senior leaders.
  • Proficiency in taking client business requirements and translating them into executable technical solutions, architecture requirements, and long-term value-focused roadmaps.
  • Skill in making the necessary tradeoffs sometimes required for delivering elegant technical solutions within a practical business context.
  • Experience in performing business and process analysis in developing and refining requirements and technical solutions.
    Proven experience in the development and sustainment of technical review boards or architecture approval committees within a complex technical environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional and fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with at least one common Enterprise Architecture framework, such as TOGAF, Zachman, Gartner or ArchiMate.
  • Experience and understanding of multiple (3 or more) technical domains – application, data, cloud, etc.
  • Understanding of IT Service Management (ITSM) principles, including design and architecture experience in a functioning IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) environment.
  • Experience with IT budget models, detailed understanding of depreciation schedules, accounting concepts, developing business cases, and production of Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) models.
  • Highly motivated and directed with keen attention to detail.
  • Committed to supporting and promoting a diverse and inclusive campus community.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent understanding of systems architecture, systems design, network technologies, software development, database administration and IT security, including identity and access management.
  • Capable of describing how systems interact across networks and how network design choices affect applications and the services they provide.
  • Experience with research computing environments including High Performance Computing (HPC) and storage infrastructures.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Azure and Amazon AWS cloud services infrastructure.
