Job Description

The Drake Laboratory in the Department of Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise at Virginia Tech is seeking a lab manager who has experience with rodent and molecular biology research.

The position is responsible for:
• Management of laboratory personnel (graduate and undergraduate students)
• Laboratory materials and equipment purchases and management
• Writing standard operating procedures
• Assisting in writing and submitting Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) protocols
• Rodent physiological testing
• Managing or assisting in Rodent Aging, Exercise, and/or Dietary Studies
• Genotyping
• Rodent Colony maintenance
• Western blotting
• Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR)
• Cell Culture
• Collection of animal tissues
• Data entry and analysis

It is also anticipated that the successful candidate will train new students and assist in writing of manuscripts.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent laboratory experience in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Nutrition, Genetics, Physiology, or related discipline; Experience with mice as a research model, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), and Genotyping; Experience with SigmaPlot, Matlab, Excel, or other software programs.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s or PhD in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Nutrition, Genetics, Physiology or related discipline; Experience with skeletal muscle function assessments (e.g. Aurora Scientific systems); Experience with Western blotting, confocal microscopy, cellular fractionation, cloning, and mammalian cell culture.

Contract length Initially 2 years with yearly progress review. Contract extension will be considered up to 4 years total.
