Job Description

The Alliance to Advance Climate-Smart Agriculture was founded to encourage sustainable agricultural productivity that helps achieve global climate goals. The Alliance seeks to help producers – particularly those that have been historically underserved – implement economically viable and environmentally sound practices. Assistantship support is available for a postdoctoral associate in the School of Plant and Environmental Sciences at Virginia Tech, with start dates possible in Fall 2024 or Spring 2025. The postdoctoral associate will work with state implementers, farmers, and other partners to evaluate efficacy of cover cropping and grazing on overall soil health and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction potentials. The postdoctoral associate will work to analyze GHG emissions resulting from various best management strategies, precision agriculture, and other technologies by combining in-field measurements and modeling.

Required Qualifications

A PhD in Crop and Soil environmental Sciences or closely related field. Candidate should have an academic record of excellence with proficiency in written expression.

Preferred Qualifications

Field and laboratory experience is preferred, especially with collection and analysis of soil samples and collection of chamber- or tower-based GHG flux measurements. Preference will be given to candidates that understand crop productions systems, fertilizer use and nutrient cycling, cover crops, and other practices being cost-shared through USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Services programs. Use of COMET-Planner and COMET-Farm is beneficial.
