Job Description

The Office for Inclusion and Diversity (OID) is a catalyst for capacity-building across the institution, promoting sustainable institutional transformation and accountability; representational diversity; an inclusive, welcoming, affirming, accessible, and safe campus climate; and the integration of issues of equity and identity into the academic mission. Upholding InclusiveVT, the institutional and individual commitment to the Virginia Tech motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve), the office seeks to create a more just and inclusive community that welcomes, encourages, and supports individuals who desire to contribute to and benefit from the institution's missions of learning, discovery, and engagement. The Indigenous Community Center at Virginia Tech is seeking a dynamic and culturally competent Program Coordinator to support and enhance center programs and student support. This role will heavily assist in the planning and coordination of highly visible university programs such as Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Heritage Month, and Powwow. Under the direction of the Center Director, the Program Coordinator will be responsible for planning and coordinating events that enhance community visibility, advance campus awareness and education, and support community building, development, and success for the Indigenous population on campus.

In this role, you will serve as a source of support for Native and Indigenous students, providing mentorship and assistance with academic, personal, and cultural challenges. You will be responsible for planning and coordinating programs and events aimed at engaging students, which will include organizing cultural celebrations, academic workshops, and social gatherings. This will involve working closely with student organizations, community leaders, and cultural experts to ensure the relevance and impact of programs. You will also evaluate the effectiveness of programs through feedback and assessment, making necessary adjustments to enhance outcomes.

In addition, you will maintain up-to-date knowledge of Indigenous cultures, histories, and contemporary issues to better support students and educate the broader campus community. This includes creating and promoting resources that foster an understanding and appreciation of Indigenous perspectives and contributions.

Administrative responsibilities will include managing program resources and logistics effectively, as well as preparing reports and documentation on program activities, student engagement, and outcomes for institutional assessment and improvement.
