Job Description

The Sensory Evaluation Laboratory Manager position will support the mission of the Food Science and Technology Department at Virginia Tech by identifying, developing, and managing externally funded projects centered around food quality and acceptability. The primary duties of this position will be to maintain and increase the capacities of the Virginia Tech Sensory Evaluation Laboratory (VT SEL) so as to be able to successfully offer shelf-life, product-quality, and sensory-evaluation contract-research services to University, Industry, and other external stakeholders. The successful candidate will develop a self-supporting program based on externally funded projects so as to fund the position, the program, and future activities.

Required Qualifications

BS in Food Science & Technology or related degree, or at least 2 years of relevant laboratory/project management experience; Research kitchen or food-product design laboratory-management experience; Willingness to learn basic experimental-design and statistical-analysis methods;

Preferred Qualifications

MS in Food Science & Technology, or 5 years of relevant laboratory/project management experience; Experience with sensory-management software (e.g., Compusense, RedJade, SIMS, FIZZ, or other); Basic experimental-design training; Survey-design experience;
Knowledge of statistical approaches for food-science: binomial and basic linear modeling;
ServSafe or other relevant food-safety training;
