Job Description

The Department of Population Health Sciences in the Virginia Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech seeks a strategic and visionary leader for the position of Department Head. The Department of Population Health Sciences embraces a One Health approach as it implements a vision to continue the expansion of population health sciences at Virginia Tech through discovery, learning and engagement. The department is home to: (1) the Public Health Program which offers accredited Master of Public Health (MPH) and Bachelors of Science in Public Health (BSPH) degrees; (2) several centers, including the Center for Public Health Practice and Research (http://www.cphpr.mph.vetmed.vt.edu/ ) and the Center for Public and Corporate Veterinary Medicine (https://career-transition.vetmed.vt.edu/ ); and (3) strategic planning for and coordination of international programs for the College. Additionally, department faculty contribute to instruction of population health related courses in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program.

The Department Head will provide leadership and management of all departmental academic, research and service activities and will serve on the College Executive Board. This entails supervision of faculty and staff, administrative responsibility for planning, fiscal management, human resources and communication. In addition, the Department Head is expected to advance the research and teaching missions of this growing department, nurture interdisciplinary collaboration and advance strategic goals of the department, college, and university.

Required Qualifications

A doctoral degree with experience/training in population health/public health
Ability to articulate a vision for the continued advancement of population health sciences and experience in effectively leading change
Commitment to advancing One Health
Commitment to advancing Public Health in rural communities
Demonstrated sustained intellectual and administrative leadership in population health/public health teaching and research
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Evidence of excellence in teaching, research/scholarship, and history of external funding, sufficient to be eligible for tenure in the Department
Experience mentoring and developing faculty
Commitment to advancing diversity, inclusivity and well-being for all individuals in an academic environment
Fiscal management and budgeting experience

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with students as academic or career advisor
Experience in mentoring students, either undergraduate or graduate, in research activities
Evidence of interdisciplinary collaboration
