Job Description

The Public Safety Management Area at Virginia Tech is comprised of the Police Department, Environmental Health & Safety, and the Office of Emergency Management and has a critical role in supporting the well-being of our community. We are essential in planning for and responding to emergency events, and in creating a culture of preparedness where employees and students are safe in their work and living environments.

The Compliance Safety Officer provides professional assistance to the Virginia Tech Environmental Health and Safety Office in monitoring and coordinating a comprehensive health and safety program within the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC following federal, state, local, and granting agencies requirements. Reporting to the University Chemical Hygiene Officer, the incumbent facilitates safe laboratory operations through education and the annual inspection process. The position is responsible for administering the lab safety and biosafety programs, chemical and biohazardous waste program, and fume hood testing program, to include interpretation of regulations and implementation of programs. They will provide assistance in use of the Safety Management System. The Compliance Officer will also review hazards/waste collection needs of new laboratories.

In addition, the incumbent is responsible for ensuring training is accessible and complete, including visiting students, faculty, and volunteers. The CSO also assists with information dissemination on various issues after collaborating with subject matter experts at Environmental Health and Safety. The incumbent also performs other duties as requested; takes initiative to support a healthy work environment; strives to fulfill the terms in the Standards of Business Conduct; exemplifies the Virginia Tech Principles of Community; and supports the university’s motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).

Required Qualifications

Education
• An advanced degree with an emphasis in science, engineering, life sciences or public health or training and experience equivalent to an advanced degree.

Experience
• Considerable experience with a wide variety of multidisciplinary labs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Working knowledge of the Laboratory Safety Standard, OSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations;
• Demonstrated effective communication skills;
• Ability to safely move and handle up to 50 pounds;
• Good knowledge of computers and software (such as data entry/recording, word processing, etc.);
• Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Safety experience in an academic environment.
• Familiarity with the Virginia Tech campus.
• Chemical Hygiene Officer, Certified Industrial Hygiene Officer, or Certified Biosafety Professional/Registered Biosafety Officer certification.
• Experience shipping hazardous materials.

Additional Information

The incumbent will spend the majority of their working time at the VT campus in Roanoke with routine trips to the VT Blacksburg campus.

The selected candidate will be required to successfully complete a criminal conviction and driving records check.
