Job Description

The Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine (VMCVM) Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, Blacksburg, VA, invites applications for a full-time, calendar-year, clinical non-tenure track faculty position in Large Animal Emergency and Critical Care. The successful applicant will join a team of 2 dedicated large animal emergency and critical care clinicians with house officer support. These faculty will work closely with the Large Animal Surgery, Large Animal Internal Medicine, Equine Field Service, and Production Management Medicine services supporting the teaching, clinical service, and research goals of the College. The duties of this position have an emphasis toward clinical service in after-hours emergency coverage. This position offers a unique opportunity to have a major role in implementation of a dedicated large animal emergency service. Applicants must be committed to excellent patient care, exceptional client service, and strong referring veterinarian relationships. The large animal hospital caseload is varied and consists of approximately 80% equine and 20% other species (e.g., small ruminant, South American camelid, porcine). The successful candidate will join a team environment, working closely with colleagues in the Department and other units of the VMCVM. Scholarly activity and participation in collaborative research commensurate with a non-tenure track faculty position will be expected. The successful candidate will have opportunities to contribute to clinical experiential, didactic, laboratory, and small group instruction of DVM students. The successful candidate will also be engaged with instruction of interns and residents.

The VMCVM has four campuses: Blacksburg, VA - Main campus at Virginia Tech; Leesburg, VA - Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center; Roanoke, VA – Animal Cancer Care and Research Center; College Park, MD - University of Maryland. Blacksburg is a friendly university town in southwest Virginia near the Blue Ridge Mountains, less than 20 miles from the Appalachian Trail and Jefferson National Forest, and within driving proximity to major metropolitan cities. Required Qualifications

This position requires a DVM or equivalent degree and successful completion of a residency training program approved by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS), American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM), and/or American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC). Candidates are required to have substantial clinical experience in large animal emergency management, which can include experience during residency training. Candidates must be eligible for a Virginia faculty veterinary license and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across diverse teams and stakeholders. Candidates must also have demonstrated ability to foster an inclusive environment that values diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in all interactions and initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications

Status as a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS), American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM), and/or American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC) and an advanced degree (MS/PhD) in biomedical sciences are preferred.
