We’re currently searching for two Embedded Counselors to join the Thomas E. Cook Counseling Center team in Blacksburg, VA to help us in our mission. One is located in the College of Science (COS) 5 days/week, and one will be located in the Pamplin College of Business (PCOB) in a hybrid role of 3 days/week in PCOB, and 2 days/week at our main location on campus. These embedded counselors will serve a dual role of providing direct clinical and psycho-educational services to students while also providing consultation and training opportunities for the faculty, advisors, and staff of the college.
HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS ROLE:
1) You’ll be joining the Thomas E. Cook Counseling Center team; a department centered on student mental health and well-being through brief focused therapy interventions and outreach.
2) You’ll be reporting to the Assistant Director, in a Regular twelve-month, 100% administrative professional appointment.
3) You’ll be responsible for providing direct clinical services to undergraduate and graduate students including initial consultation and assessment, crisis interventions as needed, individual and group counseling, psychiatric referrals, and consult with faculty, advisors, and staff regarding student mental health concerns.
4) You’ll serve a dual role of providing direct clinical and psycho-educational services to students while also providing consultation and training opportunities for the faculty, advisors, and staff of the college.
5) You’ll work closely with the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs in their college to learn more about and deepen understanding of the college’s community culture.
6)You’ll have the chance to grow and take advantage of a developmental plan with opportunities to advance within the Department and the Division.

3) THE TEAM: The Cook Counseling Center provides mental health services to the student community of Virginia Tech. The embedded counselor works with a multidisciplinary staff of counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, nurse practitioners, psychology interns, psychiatry residents, and practicum students to deliver services that maintain the highest standards of professional and ethical care. The center has a central location with embedded counselors on the Blacksburg campus, in our Roanoke facility, and at the Washington D.C. Metro-area campus. The center is accredited by the International Accreditation of Counseling Services and the internship training program by the American Psychological Association.
Required Qualifications
• Master’s degree in counseling or social work plus two years of experience or a doctoral degree in clinical or counseling psychology, from an APA-approved program with an APA-approved internship and be licensed as a licensed professional counselor, licensed clinical social worker, or licensed clinical psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Supervision may be provided with a goal of licensure within 1-2 years depending on degree.
• Experience in providing focused therapeutic interventions with a multidisciplinary team.
• Experience and interest in collaboration with academic departments, faculty, and staff.
• Training and experience in delivering culturally competent interventions.
• Experience in outreach and educational programming, e.g., suicide prevention gate-keeper programs.
• Experience with managing crisis situations, completing risk assessments, and disposition planning to address safety risks
• A self-motivated, self-directed commitment to the highest ethical standards of professional practice
• The energy to flexibly manage the professional demands of the role while maintaining positive and healthy relationships
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues with acceptance, respect, and trust
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in working with undergraduate and graduate students.
• Previous training and/or experience in a college mental health setting
• Well-developed counseling and clinical supervision skills
