Assists Field Coordinator and Wildlife Worker in monitoring the red-cockaded woodpecker population on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in coastal North Carolina, including carrying out research on their biology and management and on other aspects of the long leaf pine ecosystem they inhabit. Monitoring includes maintaining an inventory of red-cockaded woodpecker cavity trees and checking them for occupancy, monitoring actively used cavities for nesting, banding nestlings and adults, determining fledging success and censusing the adult population.
Bachelors degree in biology, wildlife biology or related field; ability to walk up to 6 miles per day and to climb up to 50 feet using Swedish ladders; ability to navigate through undeveloped forested habitat using GPS and maps; ability to interpret instructions and complete assignments independently or as part of a team.
Masters degree in biology, wildlife biology or related field; experience working with red-cockaded woodpeckers; experience banding birds and reading color bands; experience identifying birds by sight and sound; ability to operate power drills in order to construct artificial cavities for red-cockaded woodpeckers; ability to operate power drill and chainsaw in order to construct artificial cavities for red-cockaded woodpeckers.
Commensurate with experience, $17.00 - $19.00
The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
