Job Description

Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI) - Virginia Tech welcomes applications for a Network Administrator to administer computer networks and systems in the CCI xG Testbed.

We are looking for a Network Administrator to maintain a reliable, secure and efficient data communications network in-lab and in-the-field for research and development on O-RAN and 5G & beyond technologies.

The xG Testbed, led by CCI, is looking for a Network Administrator to administer the computer networks and systems of the CCI xG testbed. The Network Administrator is expected to implement, manage and troubleshoot networks and systems according to a CCI’s needs and goals. The Network Administrator will be responsible for installing and maintaining computer systems for research, monitoring computer and network systems to improve performance, making sure all users know how to use the networks and systems properly and ensuring all system users have authorized access. Maintaining system security, making sure websites function, upgrading network and computer systems and fixing network, hardware, software and systems problems are all duties for the candidate.

To support CCI research efforts, this position’s responsibilities will include working with the rest of the XG Testbed team in development, configuration, and maintenance of advanced wireless network architectures and testbed assets.

This position is located in Arlington, Virginia and is expected to be in office 5 days a week.

Required Qualifications

● Knowledge of networking services and common networking protocols
● Knowledge of cloud services
● Knowledge of network virtualization (Virtual Machines and Containers)
● Knowledge of computer network and wireless network communication
● Computer proficiency and understanding of various types of hardware
● Background in wireless networking, IPv4 networking
● Demonstrated ability to working effectively within a diverse team
● Ability to problem solve and think critically to support troubleshooting of different types
● Attention to detail to include the ability to build executive level presentations
● Good communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

● Solid background in Linux and Unix system networking
● Solid background in network virtualization (i.e. virtual machine, VLAN)
● Solid background in network containerization (i.e. Kubernetes)
● DevSecOps skills
● Scripting skills in python and bash
● Understanding of cloud computing and on-premises capabilities to include but not limited how to instrument and configure networking in Cloud/Edge Platform.
