Job Description

As an Environmental, Health, and Safety Technician (EHS Tech), you'll play a vital role in keeping Virginia Tech residential and dining spaces a safe and healthy environment. Your work directly impacts the Hokie experience by ensuring that students have a safe, comfortable, and healthy living environment to live and learn in. From conducting routine building walkthroughs, to inspecting fire extinguishers, exit signs, and emergency lights to conducting pest control treatments and mold surveys, you'll help maintain the spaces where students live, study, and build lifelong memories.

Through your efforts, you'll assist students with their needs in dorm rooms and living areas, making a real difference in their day-to-day lives while gaining valuable hands-on experience in the field.

This position covers a variety of tasks, and it is not expected for a candidate to have experience in all fields. If you’re willing to learn and are hardworking, we’ll provide all the training and the support you need over time to become proficient in all the primary responsibilities. Our goal is to help you build the skills and knowledge to succeed in this role, step by step.

Primary Responsibilities:
• Inspect fire extinguishers, exit lights, and emergency lights
• Perform building walkthroughs to identify fire code violations
• Conduct mold surveys and remediation efforts
• Carry out pest control inspections and treatments
• Conduct asbestos and lead sampling

Professional Development & Certification:
The successful candidate will obtain the following certifications over a 3-year period. Licenses and certifications must be obtained to maintain satisfactory job performance.

• Commercial Pesticide Applicator
• Licensed Asbestos Inspector
• Licensed Lead Inspector

The overall goal and expectation are for the successful candidate to obtain asbestos and lead inspector licensure/certification within the second year of employment and obtain the commercial pesticide applicator within 3 years of employment; however, the precursor to obtain the Commercial Pesticide Applicator license is to become a pesticide Registered Technician, which is expected to be obtained within the 1st year of employment. These dates may be extended or adjusted as deemed necessary by management.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Ability to take classes online and complete specified course work independently and on schedule.
• Ability to successfully obtain certifications/licenses.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience in pest control
• Previous experience in fire and life safety
• Previous experience with mold, asbestos, and lead inspections and/or remediation.

The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check as well as a driving check with a safe driving record.
