Job Description

The School of Performing Arts seeks a Visiting Assistant Professor, Instrumental Music Education for a two-year appointment. This full time, 9-month appointment would commence August 10, 2025. The successful candidate will teach courses in instrumental music education and other area of strength (music technology preferred); observe and mentor student teachers; contribute to student recruitment activities; serve on committees and perform other appropriate university service.

The School of Performing Arts (SOPA) is one of four schools (along with the Schools of Architecture, Visual Arts, and Design) in the newly formed College of Architecture, Arts, and Design (AAD), which launched in July 2022. SOPA offers programs in music, theatre, and cinema at the graduate and undergraduate level. Programs are delivered in Virginia Tech’s Creativity and Innovation District, which concentrates 11 performance spaces within a three-block area on the Blacksburg campus. Performance venues range from the 1,300-seat Moss Arts Center to a 101-seat experimental theatre.

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Music Education, Instrumental Conducting, or a related
• Secondary school classroom teaching experience (instrumental)

Preferred Qualifications

• Earned Ph.D., Ed.D., or DMAE in Music Education or a related field
• Demonstrated success in teaching at the college level
• Accreditation or demonstrated experience or proficiency in Music Technology
