Job Description

The Technical Manager of Financial Aid Business Systems serves as a critical leader within the Office of University Scholarships and Financial Aid (USFA) at Virginia Tech. This position provides operational management and systems leadership, with responsibility for ensuring the office is strategically prepared to transition to the Ellucian Banner Cloud by May 2026, and to lead future readiness efforts should the institution adopt a new ERP system in the next five years.

In collaboration with the Associate Director, this role oversees core systems functions and operational planning, providing guidance on the design, integration, documentation, testing, and maintenance of financial aid systems. This includes managing Banner functionality, integrations with related systems, the buildout of a data warehouse via Insights, financial aid data dashboard development, and strategic and compliance reporting. The incumbent collaborates closely with the AVP, Deputy Director, Associate Director and other senior leaders to align operational strategies with institutional goals and compliance standards.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree plus training and work experience that equates to a master's degree.

Significant demonstrated experience in financial aid administration in a technical capacity.

Demonstrated ability to supervise staff, manage daily operations, guide office policy development, and lead system development projects.

Extensive experience with Ellucian Banner, including configuration, support, testing of upgrades, and documentation.

Proven ability to handle confidential data and maintain compliance with data protection and privacy standards.

Excellent communication, supervisory, and project leadership skills; ability to mentor and train others.

Demonstrated experience leading projects and applying project and change management principles in a professional setting.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, STEM, or a related field preferred.

Demonstrated direct experience with Banner Financial Aid, including programming, system integration, strategic and ad hoc reporting, and problem resolution.

Proficiency with Argos, Tableau, and data visualization tools.

Familiarity with BDMS or similar document imaging systems.

Experience with project management methodologies and tools.
