Job Description

The Shin Lab at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at Virginia Tech Carilion is seeking a part-time Research Assistant to support cutting-edge neuroscience projects. This role offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of experimental neuroscience and computational data analysis, making it ideal for motivated individuals interested in pursuing graduate or medical training. This position combines hands-on laboratory research with computational/programming experience (MATLAB/Python), along with lab management responsibilities such as supply ordering and record keeping. Successful candidates will thrive in a diverse scientific environment, gain exposure to advanced techniques, and contribute to ongoing projects investigating brain circuits and behavior.

Key Responsibilities
• Perform laboratory experiments following established protocols.
• Maintain precise, well-organized records of experiments and tissue samples.
• Assist in rodent handling, brain anatomy research, and molecular techniques
• Compile and analyze experimental data using MATLAB, Python, or other coding tools.
• Communicate findings clearly with other researchers.
• Ensure all procedures comply with research protocols and ethical standards.
• Manage laboratory supplies and assist with organizational tasks.
• Contribute to a well-functioning team environment.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Strong interest in computational coding/programming (MATLAB, Python) and data analysis.
• Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and communication abilities.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Prior research experience in biology, neuroscience, or a related field

Preferred Qualifications

• Degree or coursework in Neuroscience, Biology, or a related discipline (or equivalent training/experience).
• Prior experience in academic or research laboratory settings.
