Job Description

The Senior Fiscal Technician provides comprehensive fiscal and operational support to assigned departments, working both independently and collaboratively under the direction of the Assistant Director of Business Affairs as part of the Provost Division’s Business Services Unit support team. The position will provide primary support to the College Access Collaborative, while also serving the broader Provost Division. The College Access Collaborative (CAC) aims to increase academic preparation, access, affordability, and degree attainment for first-generation and low-income college-bound students.

This position is responsible for a variety of business functions to include: state, sponsored, and private fund accounting, fixed asset tracking, monthly reconciliations, procurement, travel coordination, proactive budget monitoring utilizing Excel, wage payroll management, and event planning.

The role requires exceptional attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to interpret and apply university and foundation policies and procedures. The Senior Fiscal Technician serves as a key resource to departmental staff and leadership by processing transactions accurately and timely, monitoring budgets to proactively identify potential issues, preparing standard and ad hoc management reports, and supporting the fiscal needs of events, projects, and special initiatives.

This position requires the ability to follow direction, take initiative, and work effectively as a member of a business services team that supports the Provost Division. Effective communication and exceptional customer service are essential, as this position is expected to work across departments and coordinate with external partners to meet deadlines, solve problems, and ensure smooth operations. The candidate will demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to take on other duties as assigned. The successful candidate will demonstrate sound independent judgment in daily decision-making while maintaining high standards of compliance, customer service, and confidentiality.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, or related field; or equivalent training and/or experience.
• Previous experience in office administration, fiscal coordination, project or event support, or related administrative functions demonstrating increasing levels of responsibility.
• Working knowledge of accounting/financial systems as well as office practices and procedures.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Suite, especially Microsoft Excel for data analysis and reporting.
• Strong communication, customer service, and organizational skills with the ability to interact comfortably and professionally with individuals at all levels.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience providing fiscal and administrative support in an academic or professional office environment.
• Experience with Virginia Tech systems such as HokieMart, Banner Finance, ChromeRiver, FINTRACS, MicroStrategy, and Banner Time Entry.
• Advance proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot table analysis.
• Knowledge of university and Commonwealth of Virginia policies and procedures related to fiscal operations, purchasing, and travel.
• Experience performing reconciliations and preparing budget status reports.
