Reporting to the Laboratory Manager of the Genomics Sequencing Center at the Fralin Life Sciences Institute at Virginia Tech, the Senior Next Generation Genomics Specialist will work as part of a team of scientists and researchers to generate processes and analyze next generation sequencing data, produced by the Illumina platforms and long read technologies. The NGS Specialist will have a primary responsibility of managing the Illumina platforms NovaSeq, NextSeq and Miseq and performing NextGen sequencing services for Genomics Sequencing Center's (GSC) customers. As a secondary responsibility, the specialist will help with Sanger sequencing when necessary. In addition, the specialist will be cross trained to assist in other technologies which include, but are not limited to, Clarity LIMS, high throughput sample preparations, qPCR, and other molecular applications as needed to accomplish specific project goals. The Senior NGS specialist will also help the manager with preliminary Bioinformatics analysis of NGS data and provide training and resources to other members of GSC team.
B.S. in biology or equivalent level of training and/or experience in related field. Previous experience with a wide variety of molecular methods such as PCR and Hybridization, and Electrophoresis. Experience working with RNA and DNA isolation, purification and quantification; familiarity with genome preparation and equipment; experience with computers and familiarity with standard application such as Word and Excel; knowledge of laboratory automation; be creative, possess high motivation and strong customer service skills, and communication skills; and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a team as well as independently with little direction.
Previous experience in a molecular biology laboratory or laboratory production facility.
Non-Exempt: Eligible for overtime
