Job Description

Reporting to the Accessibility Developer Team Lead in Virginia Tech’s Office for Civil Rights Compliance and Prevention Education, this position will assist in providing guidance, consultation, and training to campus units in designing accessible content and fostering a community of developers and content creators committed to best practice and inclusivity.

This position will work with the digital accessibility team to assist communication, design, development, academic, and administrative teams in remediating accessibility issues and providing professional development opportunities to guide proactive accessible design. They will collaboratively audit and assess electronic and information technology (EIT) for compliance with information technology accessibility conformance standards, university policy, and legal compliance.

Required Qualifications

· Bachelor's degree in web development, web design, information science, computer science, instructional design, learning technology, assistive technology, user experience, or similar field
· Demonstrated experience working in the field of web accessibility
· Deep understanding of accessibility standards and laws, such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), ADA, Section 504, Section 508, and the Virginia IT Access Act
· Strong understanding of how to build web pages using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
· Experience evaluating the accessibility of Electronic & Information Technology (EIT) resources (web-based applications, services, content, etc.) via manual reviews and using automated testing tools and assistive technologies (e.g. JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver)
· Strong organization and project management skills to effectively manage multiple projects and competing priorities and deadlines
· Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in teams
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills
· Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills

Preferred Qualifications

· Master’s degree web development, web design, information science, computer science, instructional design, learning technology, assistive technology, user experience, or similar field
· Certification as a Certified Professional in Web Accessibility by the IAAP, or related certifications in Accessibility or related certifications in Accessibility.
· Certification as a Web Accessibility Specialist (WAS) by the International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP)
· Certification as a U.S. Department of Homeland Security Section 508 Trusted Tester Certification, or related certifications in Accessibility.
· Demonstrated ability to convey complex technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
· Experience with JavaScript
Experience with frameworks like React, Angular, Vue.js, git, and other developer tools
· Experience as a tech lead or cloud developer in an agile environment
· Understand and support the “Shift Left” movement of accessibility
· Experience performing accessibility remediations of documents (e.g. Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
· Experience performing accessibility remediations of PDF documents (e.g. Adobe Acrobat Pro or PREP)
· Experience developing and/or testing highly dynamic interactive web content that makes use of the technologies described in the Accessible Rich Internet Applications (ARIA) specification and associated working group notes.
· Experience with DubBot
· Experience with Deque axe and/or similar testing tools
· Experience in higher education
· Experience leading webinars and teaching
· Experience in quality assurance, testing, or design
· Experience working and collaborating with people with disabilities
· Experience with learning management systems and web conferencing technologies
· Experience with development and/or accessibility testing of native apps
· Ability to use a wide variety of popular assistive technologies (e.g. Dragon NaturallySpeaking, ZoomText, and Read&Write).

Additional Information

The position is available for 100% remote work but will require visiting the Blacksburg campus  4-6 times per year on short notice.

The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
