Job Description

The Associate Director for Health Professions Advising (HPA) leads and develops a broad range of services to support approximately 2,000 undergraduates and alumni preparing for careers in healthcare and health sciences – with a particular focus on students pursuing professional school admission in fields such as medicine, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, physician assistant, nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, clinical laboratory science, and veterinary medicine. Under the leadership of the Director of Career Pathways and College Relations, the associate director supervises three staff members to execute healthcare-focused career advising, events, and educational programming; create and curate resources and tools; facilitate for-credit course(s); administrate healthcare-related scholarships and grants; build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders across campus; and facilitate an advisory board.
As a member of the Career Pathways and College Relations Team, the Associate Director for Health Professions Advising is also responsible for collaborating with teammates as well as members of the Career Exploration and Special Population Engagement Team to establish a cohesive suite of student-facing programs, services, and resources to connect students in diverse majors to healthcare career opportunities.
As a subject matter expert on health professions/healthcare careers, the associate director may also lead special projects and represent CPD and/or Virginia Tech on committees and workgroups (internal or external).

Required Qualifications

A master’s degree in biological, life, or health sciences; healthcare administration; counseling, higher education administration; student affairs/student personnel services; or a related field is required, as well as significant experience in either university career services, human resources, training and development, workforce development, or another educational setting. Effective interpersonal communication and organizational skills. The ability to work cogently and with sensibility toward the needs of a diverse student body. Demonstrated understanding of healthcare career pathways and the connections between these pathways and undergraduate curricula.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience teaching at the secondary or postsecondary level. Experience with academic and/or career advising. Extensive knowledge of healthcare career pathways. Knowledge of trends in medical and healthcare professional school admissions. Experience with direct supervision of full-time staff, part-time staff, graduate/student assistants, or teaching assistants. Experience leading a team.
