College graduate with a major in Structural or Civil Engineering from an accredited university, or equivalent, to conduct interdisciplinary inspections throughout all phases of construction to verify compliance with codes and related regulations during construction. Knowledge of work covered by the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code and its referenced standards, ASCE-7 and other related structural design standards, and structural aspects associated with the Virginia Statewide Fire Code for new construction, renovations, and repairs of educational, commercial, industrial, one- and two-family dwellings, and other structures to assure compliance during inspections. Also conduct interdisciplinary reviews of plans and documents at a nationally recognized research university. Evaluate proposed alternative designs to determine whether equivalent measures are provided. Analysis and decisions require engineering and constructability expertise as they affect life safety. The work shall be performed in a complex and fast-paced setting requiring professional expertise, attention to details, and client assistance. Other related duties as required under the supervision of the University Building Official.
- Degree from an accredited college or university in Structural or Civil Engineering.
- The ability to become a Licensed Professional Engineer as defined by the Code of Virginia and required by the University's management agreement with the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Must have or be capable of acquiring VA DHCD certification as a commercial building inspector within 18 months of employment.
- Must have or be capable of acquiring VA DHCD certification as a commercial building plans examiner and in one additional commercial trade inspector classifications (Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, Fire Protection) within 36 months of employment.
- Working knowledge of the application of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Codes (Accessibility, Fire Protection, Electrical, etc), and related standards.
- Must have the ability to resolve issues in an amicable manner and promote a team approach to problem solving. Organizational skills to work in a fast paced and multitasking environment with variable priorities in required.
- Must be able to travel to and from work sites and perform on-site inspections. Site inspections require bending, climbing, pushing/pulling, reaching, lifting, standing, walking and moving and handling up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to maneuver in small spaces and walk and perform work tasks on uneven surfaces.
- Have experience in complex calculations and evaluations of structural systems, engineering/architectural principles and practices of design, construction, and inspection processes for large and small projects.
- VA DHCD Certified Building Official.
- Advanced degree from an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering
- Specialization in structural design
Exempt: Not eligible for overtime
$80,000-$90,000; commensurate with experience
• This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States without the need for current or future sponsorship.
• This is a full-time, calendar year, restricted appointment which may be renewed annually. However, there is no presumption of renewal for this appointment. Continuation of this appointment, even during the initial year, is subject to the availability of funds, the need for services, and satisfactory performance.
The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
