Job Description

The Department of English at Virginia Tech invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Creative Writing with a record of publishing in fiction and poetry. Teaching responsibilities include two courses per semester in graduate and undergraduate fiction, poetry, and hybrid forms workshops. The successful candidate will also advise MFA student theses and participate in service committees. We especially welcome applicants with expertise in African American, Arab American, Asian American, Indigenous, Latinx, and/or Queer literatures.

Required Qualifications

  • Publications in reputable venues in both fiction and poetry
  • MFA or PhD in hand by date of hire (August 10, 2026)
  • Evidence of teaching excellence

Preferred Qualifications

  • Single-authored book of fiction or poetry published with a reputable national press
  • Strong publication record in both fiction and poetry
  • Experience teaching and advising graduate students
  • Commitment to student growth and professionalism, for example through organizing student readings and other student-centered events
