Job Description

The School of Plant and Environmental Sciences (SPES) is seeking to hire a Research and Laboratory Technician to coordinate and perform the physical handling of over 50,000 soil samples annually through the Virginia Tech Soil Testing Laboratory. This involves setup, preparation, storage and disposal of samples, including equipment maintenance and modifications, some supervision of work of others, and the initial receipt of over $100,000 per year via the mail. The lab's test results are used to help educate farmers, agribusiness personnel, landscapers, and homeowners about the efficient, economical, and environmental use of fertilizer and soil resources.

Required Qualifications

Ability to use basic tools and maintain lab and mechanical equipment; Ability to work effectively with others and provide direction and monitor work of others; Ability to work safely and accurately in a laboratory, and to follow somewhat complex instructions; Ability to coordinate sample preparation and do mechanical troubleshooting independently; Ability to lift 50 lbs., and to repeatedly lift and carry up to 30 lbs. over short distances and above head level, and to climb a flight of stairs several times per day, and to work in environments of high soil dust, high noise, with strong acids and odors, and adjacent to radio frequency electrical generators.

Preferred Qualifications

Completion of a standard high school course, preferably in vocational or manual training with knowledge and experience in the sciences or agriculture and of general laboratory apparatus, equipment, reagents, and techniques.
