Job Description

The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute is currently accepting applications for the part-time position of Data Reductionist. The job involves working in our computer labs to review and analyze digital video and data collected in various research projects in order to analyze and document driver behavior, road conditions, data quality, etc., following detailed protocols. Data formats to be analyzed together include (but may not be limited to) synchronized video from multiple perspectives, graphical/tabular data, and audio data.

Successful applicants are those who are able to sit and pay close attention to detail for extended periods of time, possess strong critical thinking skills, and can work and communicate effectively both independently and as part of a team. The data review involves visual review of data (ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth) and listening (ability to hear and interpret real-time audio). Additionally, reduction involves operating and entering information within the proprietary software system (hand/finger dexterity). Occasionally, a data reductionist may be asked to drive a fleet vehicle to provide support for research studies.

Experience with data reduction and transportation research is ideal. Candidates must be able to work a consistent schedule of at least three shifts (4-hours each) per week during regular business hours (currently 8:00am-5:00pm Monday through Friday) for a total of at least 12 hours per week. Schedules must be coordinated with supervisor. Due to project schedules and training requirements, preference is given to individuals who can continue working for a year or more.

Data Reductionists are required to sign a Confidentiality/Non-Disclosure Agreement and complete an online training course in the protection of human research subjects.

Starting wage is $16.00 per hour. Opportunities for raises and advancements are available with experience.

This position is unable to sponsor work Visas.

If hired, a criminal conviction check and driving record check will be conducted prior to first day of work.

Required Qualifications

• Ability to maintain focus and attention to detail for extended periods of time.
• Experience following detailed protocols with strong critical thinking skills.
• Experience with handling confidential data.
• Prior video annotation work with documented high level of accuracy.
• Computer proficiency in office applications, such as Microsoft office.
• Ability to work and communicate effectively both independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to meet the above-stated work hours and scheduling requirements.
• Have a valid U.S. driver's license (for at least 3 months prior to hire date) and a minimum of 1 year of licensed driving experience (which may include international driving)
• Safe/acceptable driving record

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience with data reduction pertaining to transportation research.
• Some college coursework strongly.
• Prior coursework in experimental psychology or engineering and/or experience with research involving human subjects.
