This is the fiscal technician position for the Department of Economics. Fiscal duties involve maintaining financial records and processing transactions for a number of accounts, including operating, salary, overhead, startup and Virginia Tech Foundation accounts in addition to research grant funds. This means reconciling all accounts monthly in accordance with State and University guidelines and making certain that Department Management and Principal Investigators on grants get monthly updates of budget projections.
This position is also responsible for all department purchases, verifying the accuracy of invoices and processing them for payment as well as preparing and entering wage payroll. This position is also responsible for travel arrangements for faculty and department visitors. In addition, the fiscal technician is responsible for maintaining inventory records for the departmental computers and equipment, including checking out computers to members of the department, maintaining inventory records and arranging for unneeded equipment to go to surplus property. Assists with any other office needs as requested and assigned.
Required Qualifications
Demonstrated bookkeeping experience maintaining and reconciling multiple accounts
Demonstrated experience purchasing items from multiple sources for a large organization
Extensive customer service experience engaging with individuals from a wide range of professional, cultural and personal backgrounds
Experience preparing financial reports
Demonstrated ability to design and maintain large spreadsheets or databases containing complex data

Degree in accounting or equivalent experience
Experience with Banner or an equivalent financial record keeping system
Experience with HokieMart or an equivalent purchasing system
Working knowledge of the policies and procedures related to fiscal, purchasing and personnel actions for Virginia Tech, the State of Virginia or a major university other than Virginia Tech
Experience working in a job environment where prioritizing tasks and working independently were essential skills.
Non-Exempt: Eligible for overtime
