Job Description

The Division of Information Technology at Virginia Tech seeks an experienced and collaborative leader to serve as Director of Data Management and Analytics reporting to the Senior Director of Enterprise Services within Enterprise Solutions and Enabling Technologies (ESET).

The Director of Data Management and Analytics provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for Enterprise Solutions and Enabling Technologies (ESET) data and analytics portfolio. The role is responsible for translating institutional data strategy and governance direction into effective platforms, practices, and services that improve data quality, access, and analytic insight. Working in close partnership with governance bodies, Office of Analytics and Institutional Effectiveness (AIE), and business stakeholders, the Director enables the secure, ethical, and reliable use of administrative data, delivers selected enterprise analytics, and strengthens data management and reporting capabilities that support informed decision‑making, planning, and performance management across the university.

Key Responsibilities
• Develop and execute a data and analytics strategy aligned to institutional goals, operational priorities, and decision‑support needs.
• Define a value driven roadmap for analytics, reporting, and platform improvements that deliver measurable outcomes (efficiency gains, service quality, risk mitigation, mission impact).
• Translates governance policies and institution‑adopted standards into operational practice, directing the implementation of enablement tools, workflows, and processes that strengthen stewardship and ensure data quality.
• Work with key stakeholders and governance bodies on the definition of data roles (owners, stewards, custodians) and governance structures for workflows including definitions, quality rules, issue management, and approvals.
• Lead the architecture, implementation, and optimization of the Enterprise Solutions and Enabling Technologies (ESET) data infrastructure.
• Lead the design, development, and delivery of advanced analytic solutions—including reports, dashboards, and interactive data products—that support strategic planning, institutional assessment, and performance management.
• Recruit, develop, and lead a high‑performing team across data engineering, analytics, and reporting disciplines.
• Ensure data security, privacy, compliance, and responsible stewardship of institutional data.

Work Location

This is a hybrid position. The successful candidate will work onsite at the Blacksburg campus approximately 2–3 days per week. As a director-level role, regular onsite presence is essential to support team leadership, collaboration, planning, and relationship‑building efforts.

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Business, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Demonstrated experience leading and developing professional staff and overseeing complex technical or analytic work portfolios.
• Proven expertise in data management, secure data handling, data integration, BI/analytics platforms, and reporting.
• Ability to translate stakeholder and executive needs into actionable analytic objectives and communicate insights to non‑technical audiences.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience leading enterprise-scale data platforms or analytics programs in a complex organization.
• Experience designing, implementing, or maturing data governance programs (standards, stewardship, issue management, data quality).
• Experience developing and executing a multi‑year data & analytics roadmap aligned to strategic priorities.
• Experience working in higher education or similarly complex, decentralized organizational environments with diverse stakeholders and shared services.
• Demonstrated ability to manage through influence in federated or matrixed environments.
