Job Description

The Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology is seeking a creative, dynamic, self-directed, and inspiring storyteller to elevate the research and impact of the affiliated faculty, staff, and students working throughout the institute, as well as to illustrate the impact of the Institute’s educational and outreach programs. Reporting to the Executive Director of ICAT and working closely with the Senior Director of Communications and Marketing for the Office of Research and Innovation, this position will develop an editorial strategy that aligns and elevates the institute and university priorities.

The ideal candidate will be a critical thinker, identifying and developing content to be shared across institute, college, and university channels with the goal of reaching internal and external audiences. The communications coordinator will apply university and AP-style guidelines in writing, social media posts, news stories and features, web content, photo essays, targeted emails, newsletter content, and talking points. The candidate should also have experience identifying and pursuing visual opportunities for the purpose of promotion.

This is a full-time, on-site position at the Blacksburg, VA campus and may require occasional evening and weekend hours in support of planned events. This position will work along-side a web developer, be a member of the Research and Innovation marketing and communications team, and be an extension of the broader Virginia Tech marketing and communications team.

● Writing, editing, and reporting
● Collaboration with contributors
● Content curation and promotion
● Team administration

Required Qualifications

● Relevant degree in English, communications, journalism, or related field, or related experience in lieu of degree
● Demonstrated experience with reporting, writing, and editing communications for numerous audiences through various media, such as news/features stories, web pages, newsletters, social media, and marketing collateral
● Experience generating and organizing content for web sites
● Ability to work with a variety of individuals, as well as cross-functional teams, including faculty, students, and partners inside and outside of the university
● Well-developed communication, writing, and grammar skills
● Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
● Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a team from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications

● Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, journalism, or related field
● Prior experience writing about topics related to the arts, sciences, and technology
● Experience with photo and video capture in support of storytelling
● Experience with social media management and tracking metrics
● Experience with Adobe Creative Suite
