Job Description

The Virginia Tech Institute for Advanced Computing (IAC) in Alexandria, Virginia, is seeking a motivated Communications Coordinator to support the IAC’s Director of Marketing and Communications in promoting research, programs, and initiatives to enhance visibility and engagement across academic, industry, and public audiences.

This part-time position provides an excellent opportunity to work with top research faculty and administrators in a growing technology institute in the Washington, D.C., area. The communications coordinator will develop their own written and visual communications, assist with annual communications planning and social media campaigns, and have the chance to work in collaboration with Virginia Tech’s D.C. area marketing and communications team.

Key Responsibilities:
• Create content (written, photo, video) highlighting research from IAC faculty and graduate students;
• Support social media, website updates, and digital communications;
• Assist with content planning for Academic Year, including for annual campaigns such as Giving Day;
• Assist with newsletters and promotional materials;
• Collaborate with researchers to translate technical work into accessible content;
• Provide general support for marketing and communications initiatives.

Required Qualifications

• Strong writing and communication skills;
• Background/experience in marketing, communications, or technology-focused storytelling;
• Ability to convey complex topics clearly to diverse audiences;
• Familiarity with social media and digital content tools;
• Strong organizational and planning skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines with minimal supervision;
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with faculty, students, staff, and external partners.

Preferred Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree in communications, marketing, journalism, or similar field of study;
• Experience with web content management systems (CMS);
• Experience in higher education, or other complex organization;
• Interest in current tech advancements and how they affect society (AI, machine learning, quantum, etc.);
• Experience supporting events.
