Job Description

The Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation in the College of Natural Resources and Environment seeks a Data Analysis and Web Visualization Specialist for the following responsibilities:

Assist faculty, staff, and graduate students with data analysis, visualization, and communication for research, teaching, and outreach projects. Develop and support web-based tools and displays, including interactive tools such as R Shiny. Maintain and modernize/update existing departmental online assets and web content such as the Virginia Big Tree Program and the Virginia Tech Dendrology websites. Develop and deliver training and provide consultation to department members on data analysis workflows, visualization, and digital tools.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a field related to data analysis, information technology, instructional technology, natural resources, or a related discipline; or equivalent level of training and experience;
• Demonstrated ability to organize, analyze, and visualize quantitative and qualitative data;
• Demonstrated experience with software used for data analysis and visualization such as R, R Shiny, Python, spreadsheets, or similar tools;
• Demonstrated ability to update and maintain web-based content, applications, databases, or other digital resources;
• Demonstrated ability to assist faculty, staff, and students with data analysis and visualization needs and to provide related user support and training;
• Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly in written and spoken English, and to work collaboratively with individuals having a range of technical backgrounds;

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree or demonstrated experience in a discipline related to the department’s mission;
• Demonstrated ability to develop interactive dashboards, web applications, or data visualization tools for research, teaching, or outreach;
• Experience with Enterprise Content Management Systems, HTML/CSS, web accessibility, and digital communications best practices;
• Experience with environmental, forestry, natural resources, or geospatial data.
