Virginia Tech (VT) seeks to recruit an innovative clinician-scientist to its Patient Research Center (PRC) at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC (FBRI - https://fbri.vtc.vt.edu/) for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position at the associate or full professor level. The PRC initiative has received substantial funding support as part of the state’s Biomedical Research Diamond (https://cardinalnews.org/2026/02/20/friedlander-a-smart-investment-for-southwest-virginia/) to launch this major new program.
The successful candidate will have an earned M.D. degree with active medical license and preferably also have a Ph.D. as well as appropriate postdoctoral residency-fellowship training. They should have an active research program that is funded through federal agencies and/or industry for patient-based clinical research, while they may also have a more translational laboratory-based research program as well. Applications from investigators using innovative contemporary approaches to study human cardiovascular and/or cardiometabolic function in health and disease with inclusion of clinical research trials are welcomed. The faculty member will join 45 other faculty led teams at the FBRI, including 8 cardiovascular research teams, 4 exercise medicine research teams and additional groups working on dietary-metabolic health. The primary responsibility for the position is to lead a strong extramurally funded leading-edge clinical research program in cardiovascular and/or cardiometabolic science with some time devoted to patient care with our clinical partner, Carilion Clinic (https://www.carilionclinic.org/heart) and will include some research mentoring of graduate and medical students as well as fellows.
The position will be located at the FBRI on Virginia Tech’s health sciences and technology campus in Roanoke, Virginia, immediately adjacent to the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, Carilion Clinic and Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. In addition to the position at the research institute, the faculty member will also have a tenured or tenure-track appointment in an appropriate VT department from among multiple colleges, including the School of Medicine.
The successful candidate will join a dynamic and growing community of scholars including scientists, physicians and physician-scientists focused on next generation approaches to cardiovascular and cardiometabolic research directed at having dramatic impacts on prevention, diagnoses, and treatment of disorders that impact cardiometabolic function, including arrhythmogenesis, heart failure, ischemia, obesity and diabetes. Candidate whose research is complementary to that of FBRI faculty in the reserch institute’s Center for Vascular and Heart Research (https://fbri.vtc.vt.edu/research/research-centers/center-for-heart.html) and Center for Exercise Medicine Research (https://fbri.vtc.vt.edu/research/research-centers/center-for-exercise-medicine-research.html) and who are likely to add strengths in areas to contribute to major collaborative program funding are encouraged to apply.
Research infrastructure at the FBRI currently includes over 300,000 square feet of lab, core facilities and office space (http://fralinbiomed.info/buildingtour). Facilities at the research institute include multiple human subject research-dedicated 3.0T MRIs, high field MR guided PET for animal cardiology research, and MR-guided focused ultrasound, optically pumped magnetometers (OPM-MEG), multiple cellular/molecular imaging facilities including transcriptomics and genomics analysis in addition to two human whole room calorimeters, DEXA, exercise facilities and metabolic kitchen as well as a next generation molecular diagnostics laboratory.
