Job Description

Position Summary: Provides basic and intensive nursing care to all patients of all services admitted for treatment to the Large Animal Clinic of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Provides technical assistance to clinical faculty, residents, interns, and senior veterinary students concerning all aspects of patient care, animal handling and the application and use of specialized diagnostic and medical equipment. Subject to work and/or be oncall for varying shifts, days of the week, weekends and holidays. Assist in other areas as directed by the supervisor

Required Qualifications

Ability to receive and convey information and instructions to senior veterinary students, clinical faculty, and technical staff. Recognize needs and establish priorities, care and concern for large animal patients. Be able to make sound emergency decisions concerning the health and safety of both humans and animals. Restrain and administer drugs and pharmaceuticals by all acceptable routes of administration to large animals. Knowledge of: Large animal anatomy, physiology and etiology; knowledge of CPR and animal restraint methods; considerable experience handling large farm animals, proficiency in the operation, maintenance, and application of sophisticated medical equipment; IV pumps, heart monitors, centrifuge, ultrasound laser, incubator, endoscopes, hoists, slings, nebulizer, and glucometer. Must be able to safely move and handle 75 pounds. Must be able to tolerate rabies prophylaxis.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications: Licensed Veterinary Technician. Knowledge of basic nursing skills, veterinary pharmaceuticals, the application and operation of sophisticated surgical, medical, and diagnostic equipment. Knowledge of large animal surgical and medical procedures, anatomy, etiology and physiology. Experience at working in a veterinary medical setting. Experience in a large animal practice environment, ability to work well with others in an academic setting.
