The Virginia Tech Grado Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) invites applicants with industry experience for a non-tenure track Professor of Practice position based in Blacksburg. The successful candidate for this position will be part of the ISE Capstone (“Senior Design”) Program Teaching Team with instructional lab management responsibilities and additional teaching responsibilities, as needed. A primary component of this position is building and maintaining relationships with organizations sponsoring capstone projects. This open rank Professor of Practice position (assistant, associate, or full), commensurate with experience, is a Restricted Academic Year (AY) position with the opportunity to earn up to three months additional summer salary, contingent upon availability of funds from company project sponsorships. We are seeking candidates motivated to contribute to a collegial, interdisciplinary community with a strong tradition of high-quality teaching and mentoring. Required qualifications:

  • Advanced ISE degree or significant operations experience working in an industrial and systems engineering role;
  • Strong communication skills in all modes with many different levels and types of stakeholders;
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in and leading teams, including coordinating tasks, building a collaborative environment, and facilitating open communication;
  • Willingness and ability to travel to sponsor sites, adhering to sponsor safety requirements;
  • Ability to work with industry to obtain student project funding;
  • Demonstrated experience developing program budgets and adhering to financial reporting requirements.

The position includes three key areas of responsibility:

  • ISE Capstone Senior Design Program Co-Coordinator (60%) (e.g., participating as a member of the teaching team, serving as the primary liaison with external project sponsors, driving the recruitment and scoping of industry-based projects each year, and monitoring performance and metrics for the Senior Design Program overall including financial aspects);
  • Center for High Performance Manufacturing Outreach and Advancement (15%) (e.g., support ISE faculty by identifying research and consulting opportunities with industry partners, developing and delivering training programs and workshops with industry to leverage current capabilities); and
  • ISE Department Instructional and Service Support (25%) (e.g., serve as Director of the instructional hands-on lab, the Learning Factory, increasing integration of capstone and undergraduate research projects, teach courses in the ISE curriculum as needed and as aligned with candidate’s skills and experience, and serve on departmental and universities committees/initiatives as needed).

The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.

The ISE Department has 34 tenured/tenure-track faculty, with an additional nine non-tenure-track instructional and research faculty. Academic programs and research in the department encompass Human Factors Engineering and Ergonomics, Management and Systems Engineering, Manufacturing Systems Engineering, and Operations Research. The department is home to approximately 550 undergraduate students and over 200 graduate students. The undergraduate and graduate ISE programs are currently ranked third and fifth, respectively, by U.S. News & World Report.  Additional information is available at: www.ise.vt.edu.
