Job Description

The Executive Ph.D. Program in Business at Virginia Tech is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Associate or Research Scientist. We are looking for someone with a keen interest and proactive approach to engaging in grant-funded research, as well as a strong ability to secure and manage sponsored research projects. The successful candidate will conduct original research across various fields, including but not limited to business analytics, behavioral science, decision, risk and management science, marketing analytics, cybersecurity, innovation and science policy, research ethics, organizational sciences, the dynamics between people, organizations, and systems, AI, robotics, and immersive or augmenting technologies for learning, interdisciplinary approaches to societal issues, sustainable business, or other relevant research areas.

The successful candidate will collaborate with the Ph.D. program director, faculty, and students to advance research initiatives and build productive partnerships with both internal and external stakeholders. They will mentor Ph.D. students and junior researchers (if coming at the Research Scientist level), organize educational activities, and foster a collaborative research connection among faculty, Executive Ph.D. students, and full-time students. This role is pivotal in bridging the gap between academic research and real-world applications, ensuring a mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and experience.

Rank will be determined by the qualifications of the successful candidate.

Key Responsibilities of the Postdoctoral Associate:
• Assist with the preparation of grant proposals
• Collaborate closely with the director, faculty, and students to drive research initiatives.
• Mentor current Ph.D. students, fostering their research development and creating a collaborative research environment.
• Facilitate strong connections among faculty, Executive Ph.D. students, and full-time students.
• Assist in the organizing and leadership of workshops, seminars, and other educational activities to enhance the learning experience.
• Present research findings at conferences, workshops, and seminars.
• May serve as co-PI

Key Responsibilities of the Research Scientist:
• Lead and manage funded research projects, ensuring high-quality and timely completion of research objectives.
• Develop and write grant proposals to secure additional funding for ongoing and new research initiatives.
• Collaborate closely with the director, faculty, and students to drive research initiatives.
• Collaborate with various stakeholders to foster productive research partnerships.
• Mentor current Ph.D. students and junior researchers, fostering their research development and creating a collaborative research environment.
• Facilitate strong connections among faculty, Executive Ph.D. students, and full-time students.
• Organize and lead workshops, seminars, and other educational activities to enhance the learning experience.
• Present research findings at conferences, workshops, and seminars.
• May serve as PI

Required Qualifications

• Ph.D. in economics, computer science, psychology, sociology, business, or a related field.
• Ph.D. must be awarded no more than four years prior to the effective date of appointment with a minimum of one year eligibility remaining (for consideration for Postdoctoral Associate rank).
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication abilities.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Proven track record of successfully writing, securing, and managing research grants (required for the rank of Research Scientist).
• Additional training or certification in grant writing or research administration
• Demonstrated experience in leading and managing sponsored research projects (required for the rank of Research Scientist).
• Established network of collaborators and funding agency
• Commitment to fostering a collaborative and inclusive academic community
