Job Description

The Elementary Education program in the School of Education at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) is seeking applicants for the position of Assistant Professor of Practice. The elementary education program currently serves undergraduate and graduate students who earn degrees in Education leading to PK-6 licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia Tech is the state's largest residential university with more than 36,000 students. Position: Assistant Professor of Practice in Elementary Education on the Blacksburg campus. The position is a non-tenure-track, academic year appointment with possible opportunities for summer session employment. The start date is August 10, 2025.

Responsibilities: The responsibilities of the position require the assistant professor of practice to offer courses in an area(s) of expertise within the general elementary education curriculum. The standard teaching load is three courses per semester, which may include professional seminars and/or supervision of preservice teachers in schools. Additional responsibilities include advising elementary education students, supervising of the portfolio process, preparing accreditation and assessment reports, and other program responsibilities as needed. Service to the School of Education and the college is also expected. Although professor of practice faculty members may conduct research, there are no expectations for an extensive research program as is typical of tenure-track faculty appointments. There may be occasional travel to attend professional conferences. A criminal background check is required of all candidates recommended for employment.

Required Qualifications

Successful candidates must have:
1. Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, Education, or a related field. (Completion of the doctoral degree is required at the time of appointment.)
2. A minimum of 3 years of successful classroom teaching experience at the PreK-6 grade level at a U.S. school.
3. A PreK-6 teaching license in one of the U.S. states.
4. Demonstrated experience with and commitment to working with diverse populations, including knowledge and experience in creating an inclusive educational environment that supports the learning of a diverse student body.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Experience supervising pre-service teachers either as a university supervisor or a cooperating teacher in a K-12 school.
2. Experience teaching courses in an accredited elementary licensure program.
3. Experience conducting professional development for teachers (e.g., school-based, conferences, workshops).
4. Experience with CAEP or VA Dept. of Education accreditation of an elementary licensure program.
5. Expertise in an elementary-level content area.
