Reporting to the Director of Capital Design, the Architect II will:
• Assist the Director of Capital Design in the alignment of Capital Projects with the University’s mission, vision, strategic goals & initiatives, and the campus master plan.
• Assist with robust and timely design review of University Capital Projects from concept through implementation phases.
• Participate throughout Capital Project processes to provide assurance that aesthetic are appropriate and in alignment with the project’s authorized intent and Campus Design Principles.
• Assist with design review processes, value management efforts, and construction review processes for Capital Projects to complete on time and on budget.
• Provide expertise in sustainable design at a system and building scale, and provide guidance during Capital Project processes to promote sustainable design principles and best practices.
• Assist in establishing and maintaining design standards for the University.

• Ability to rely on experience and judgment to accomplish tasks including the application of innovate, creative, resourceful, and technical judgment concerning architecture, physical accessibility, barrier removal, and design and construction issues.
• Excellent communication and consensus building skills, including verbal and graphical presentation skills, and negotiation.
• Ability to work in and develop a team atmosphere and provide superior client services in a diverse environment.
• Advanced degree in Architecture, or a BS in Architecture with equivalent professional experience.
• Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident; unable to sponsor work visas.
• Extensive experience as an architect, with a strong background in licensed practice.
• Demonstrated project management expertise.
• Significant focus on the design of environmentally sustainable projects, showcasing proficiency in technical analysis of thermal performance, daylight/sunlight, embodied carbon, and related areas.
• Registration or a clear path to registration as a Professional Architect in Virginia within six months of employment.
• LEED AP with Specialty accreditation.
• Experience in applying sustainable benchmarking within architectural practice.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Proficient in standard office applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
• Skilled in online/web applications (e.g., SharePoint, OneDrive, GIS mapping).
• Proficient in design software (e.g., Revit, AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite).
• Experienced with construction management applications (e.g., Procore, Newforma, BlueBeam).
• Experience working on historically significant building projects.
• Experience working in a university setting or similar institutional setting, public agency, and/or federal/ state agency.
• Experience with Commonwealth of Virginia (or other public agency) directives and higher education facilities requirements.
• Experience in design of higher education, campus, and urban planning/design.
• Experience in developing and maintaining design standards.
Starting at $85,000; commensurate with experience
Work is performed primarily indoors, but on occasion may work outside in various weather conditions.
Repetitive movement through the use of computer/keyboarding.
Ability to travel to and from work sites and perform onsite inspections requiring bending, climbing, pushing/pulling, reaching, lifting, standing, walking and safely moving and handling up to 50 lbs. Ability to maneuver in small spaces, walk, and perform work tasks on uneven surfaces.
Must have an acceptable and safe driving record. Must have a driver's license check.
May be required to travel to non-Blacksburg sites and other Virginia Tech properties.
Travel for training, public outreach, public education, and public participation may be required. As necessary, may be required to work after hours or on weekends.
The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
