Job Description

To provide analytical data for sponsored research projects by analyzing water samples or other matrices according to written laboratory procedures using advanced instrumentation. wet chemistry techniques, and other physical, chemical, and biological quality measures. Assures that generated data are within quality control guidelines. Develops new methods to analyze for additional parameters. Assists and trains other laboratory staff and students in laboratory techniques .

Required Qualifications

Experience in water analysis or other analytical field using similar techniques; experience utilizing software applications such as Microsoft Windows, word processing, database applications, and spreadsheets; knowledge of chemical principles and techniques important in the environmental laboratory field; skilled in performing physical. chemical, and/or microbiological analyses of water. wastewater. and other matrices: ability to learn laboratory analytical techniques and instrumentation with limited direct supervision and perform these with a high degree of accuracy and precision; ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and supervisor; ability to work independently on a day-to-day basis on a variety of research projects.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in chemistry, environmental science, microbiology, biology or related discipline or equivalent level of training and experience in the area of water analysis.

The Virginia Tech Occoquan Watershed Monitoring Lab (OWML) is looking for a Laboratory Specialist to our team. The lab is located in Manassas, Va. and is part of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department.

The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
