The purpose of this position is to implement Virginia's Nutrient Management Program, with a primary focus on small unpermitted dairies by preparing Certified Nutrient Management Plans, providing technical assistance to landowners and agricultural operators and to conduct educational programs to targeted groups to reduce levels of nutrients entering groundwater and streams.
Duties of the position to include but not limited to:
* Ability to work with other nutrient management staff on dairies to address the more serious NPS problems
* Utilize the opportunities to work with localities and other agencies when conducting work activities
* Prepare and deliver nutrient management plans meeting DCR criteria
* Conduct site visits to identify temporary and permanent waste storage sites for plans
* Prioritize plan development in impaired watershed when possible
* Provide Program Manager relevant items for the weekly report on activities
* Serve as lead for Pre Sidedress-Nitrate Testing (PSNT) to include training new planners on how to run PSNT tests, training and supervising day-to-day of part-time summer staff, managing PSNT data and conducting field days.
* Work with farmers in taking and analyzing manure analysis and soil nitrate tests.
* Promote BMP cost share and other DCR programs
This individual must have a good working knowledge of dairy and other agricultural production practices and have a farming background or experience and have the ability to work with agricultural individuals with various levels of education. Must have a minimum of BS in Dairy Science, Agronomy or Crop and Environmental Science and must be Certified as a Nutrient management planner in Virginia or capable of becoming certified within 6 month of employment.
Master in Dairy Science, Agronomy, or Crop and Environmental Science.
Experience with database design and management, and/or program administration, Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat X Pro, and the ability to learn other job-related software.
Experience conducting and presenting scientific research
The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
