Job Summary/Basic Function: |
This position is responsible for overseeing the Department of Public Safety’s Event Security Program, which includes managing event security operations for university events. Boise State University hosts over 2,000 events annually, ranging from sporting events and concerts to lectures, workshops, and other social gatherings, organized by both internal and external groups.
The Associate Director will collaborate with departments and venues across campus to minimize event impacts, ensure appropriate security staffing and planning, and prioritize a positive guest experience. A critical component of this role is managing the Game Day Security Program, including overseeing metal detection operations and efficiently moving over 37,000 ticket holders into and out of the stadium during each home football game.
These responsibilities are integral to safeguarding the safety, security, and reputation of the university. With safety identified as the top priority by the University President, this position plays a vital role in upholding the well-being of students, staff, and visitors while fostering a secure and welcoming environment.
Campus Security Authority: This position is identified as a “Campus Security Authority (CSA)” per the federal law known as the Clery Act. Per this law, the employee is required to report any crimes that he/she becomes aware of to the Clery Compliance Officer. Additionally, CSAs are required to complete annual training prescribed by the Clery Compliance Officer.

Level Scope: |
Manages a large team typically consisting of both experienced professionals and subordinate Managers. Focuses on tactical and operational plans with short to mid term focus; significant responsibility to achieve broadly stated goals through subordinate Managers. Determines objectives, directs programs, develops strategies and policies, manages human, financial, and physical resources, and functions with a high degree of autonomy. Requires broad management and leadership knowledge to lead a project or program teams in one dept/job family. Proactively assesses risk to establish systems and procedures to protect organizational assets. Determines campus strategies for a program with campus wide impact.

Essential Functions: |
60% of the time the position: ● Provides leadership and management of the Event Security Operations Unit under the supervision and coordination of his/her chain-of-command. ● Includes the hiring, discipline, and termination of personnel. ● Manages employees’ scheduling, work assignments, communication, and personnel development. ● Evaluates employee performance, gives regular feedback, and conducts annual performance reviews. ● Leads a unified team for the entire Department, assisting with communication, team building, professional development, incentives, and compensation review programs. ● Ensures customer service for the entire Department and campus community. ● Monitors work activities to ensure compliance with policies and procedures. Makes recommendations for changes and improvements to existing standards, policies, and procedures. ● Manages workflow and productivity of personnel to ensure that the needs of the department and campus community are met. ● Manage all aspects of event security logistics for various on-campus events, including large-scale events. ●Develop comprehensive event plans by collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team, including public safety, student affairs, and other key departments, to ensure the safety and security of all campus events. ● In advance of an event, this position would conduct pre-event orientations or debriefs and review relevant policies and assignments (e.g., alcohol policies and staffing strategy). ● Provide operational oversight over the contracted 3rd party security company personnel assigned to work events and requested campus security events. ● This position would develop appropriate staffing rubrics – thresholds for the type and number of staff required for events based on the type of event, venue, location; and event. Some events may require a police presence in addition to security staffing, student affairs staff, and students. Other events may not require a dedicated police presence. ● Develop clear policies for event ticketing and access, credentialing, alcohol and other drugs, noise and disruption threshold, and other policies and procedures relevant to the type of event, including its location and the time of day it is being held. ● This position utilizes the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and Incident Command System (ICS) for managing critical and special event emergencies. ● Oversee the management of the Part-time Event Security Program.
35% of the time the position: ● Collaborate with external partners: Manage federal partnerships for major events and represent the department in external committees and collaborations. Contribute to department improvement: Engage in strategic planning, problem-solving, and continuous professional development. Ensure operational excellence: Oversee security contracts, conduct threat assessments, and develop and implement training programs for event staff. Prepare for and respond to emergencies: Work closely with emergency management to mitigate crisis incidents and conduct after-action reviews to improve future event operations.
5% of the time the position will perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: |
● Experience with event and/or game day management ● Experience as an instructor or training ● Excellent customer service skills ● Demonstrate creativity, initiative, and proactive problem-solving skills ● Strong organizational and time management skills ● Knowledge of law enforcement and public safety strategies ● Skilled in supervision and management of others ● Knowledge of National Incident Management System (NIMS) and the Incident Command System (ICS), as well as the Clery Act and Title IX responsibilities. ● Ability to work with a variety of people (both internal and external to the University) and demonstrate ability to work with and serve individuals from various backgrounds.

Minimum Qualifications: |
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent, plus 7 years experience including 3 years of management experience.

Preferred Qualifications: |
● At least 3 years of previous experience with event and/or game day management. ● Previous experience as an instructor or trainer.

Salary and Benefits: |
