Job Summary/Basic Function:

Develop and implement career services activities within the university, assisting with overall planning and operational activities of the program. Coordinates internship placement with employers, conduct in-progress assessment of student success in the work environment, and evaluate the total work experience.

Department Overview:

This is a part-time, non-benefit eligible Internship Coordinator position that will direct the Criminal Justice internship and field work program including coordination, placements, and management of student interns and agency partners. This position requires a commitment to assisting students with gaining practical experience. As the liaison between the Criminal Justice Program and community organizations, a keen ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with agency partners is required. In order to effectively achieve program goals and complete the essential tasks, this position will require an average workload of 19 hours per week year-round.

The Criminal Justice Internship Coordinator (CJIC) will collaborate with the Program Lead/Department Chair of Criminal Justice and the School of Public Service (SPS) Experiential and Career Learning Coordinator with the goal of providing equitable access to internships, career exploration, preparation, and experiences through individual coaching and integrated career education. This includes coaching students through exploring career options and paths even beyond and outside the college and university. The CJIC will help students prepare for internships, professional employment, and graduate and professional school opportunities through one-on-one appointments, developing and facilitating career programming, internship administration, and in and out of classroom career education opportunities.

Level Scope:

Recognized subject matter expert who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field with limited oversight from managers. Independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; requires deep job knowledge of area typically obtained through higher education combined with experience. Manages large projects or processes and problems faced are difficult and often complex; analyzes problems/issues of diverse scope and determines solutions. May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy. Influences others regarding policies, practices and procedures.

Essential Functions:

60% of Time the Career Services Specialist, Senior must:

● Coach and advise students on career planning, internship options, job-seeking skills, and industry trends to effectively prepare them to gain employment upon graduation
● Provide ongoing feedback to students with respect to individual job search skills
● Assist students with identifying areas requiring further training or knowledge and support the development of personal and professional development plans, including co-op and internship opportunities
● Coordinate internship placements with agencies from submission of the initial application through the screening process
● Manage internship courses including teaching class meetings and grading assigned materials to prepare and support students'
career goals.
● Develop and teach effective career-related coursework to internship students aligned with SPS Internship Curriculum.
● Represent university to external groups to promote the admissions, alumni relations, and placement goals of the college
● Contact potential employers to promote internship activities for the college

35% of the time:
Direct Student Services: Internship and course facilitation (~15hrs/week)

● Provide students with professional development opportunities, including workshops (e.g., crafting cover letters and resumes),
presentations, and programs.
● Monitor student progress to ensure a successful experience.
● Compassionately and effectively respond to student concerns and challenges.
● Be sensitive to the needs of diverse student populations.
● Preserve confidentiality of sensitive information.
● Collaborate with Career Services and SPS internship coordinators.
● Ensure accurate data tracking of placements and student outcomes aligned with Career Service Internship Application database,
University Registrar, and Academic requirements.
Agency Partnership: Development, Improvement, and Maintenance (~4 hours/week)
● Coordinate effectively with agency partners to facilitate appropriate placements, meaningful student experiences, and positive relationships with CJ, SPS, and BSU.
● Identify, recruit, vet, and track appropriate, new possible internship and field placement sites.
● Navigate and respond to agency concerns.
● Build reciprocal relationships with internship agency partners.
● Meet with agency supervisors to discuss requirements and processes.
● Collaborate with CJ Program Lead/Department Chair and team to develop targeted events and programs for students to connect and network with employers and alumni.

5% Perform other duties as assigned.

● Ability to conduct business with attention to ethical considerations, University policies and procedures, employment law and accreditation guidelines
● Excellent customer service skills

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree or relevant experience plus 5 years experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

2+ years of work experience in a criminal justice profession
Salary and Benefits:
 
Salary range is $26.00- $27.00/hour.
