Job Summary/Basic Function:

We seek a highly motivated and flexible Postdoctoral Scientist to work on collaborative industry research project teams that utilize cutting-edge advanced manufacturing technology to address energy and sustainability topics in dairy, barley, biomass, potatoes, beans, and more. The successful candidate will be independent and adaptable to make progress on a multitude of projects simultaneously. Sound scientific reasoning, an inquisitive nature, joy for laboratory experimentation, accessible and collaborative, and masterful oral and written communication skills are critical attributes. The successful candidate will seek to push the limits of current knowledge and grow professionally.

Department Overview:

The Food and Dairy Innovation Center (FDIC) at Boise State University was established in 2021 for collaborative research, fostering partnerships between academia and industry to use a convergent science approach to drive innovation for the food industry. The FDIC provides a vibrant environment for student growth and professional development, offering hands-on experience in conducting industry-sponsored projects that translate into real-world solutions. The McDougal research group within the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Boise State University is an interdisciplinary research team focused on food chemistry, dairy science, natural products chemistry, and toxicology studies, where we use analytical instrumentation to extract, separate, quantitate, quantify, and assess the structure and bioactivity of analytes from plant, food, and dairy sources.

Essential Functions:

Research Execution (60%)

• Design, conduct, and analyze experiments utilizing pulsed electric field (PEF) technology within relevant research areas (e.g., barley, dairy, biomass).
• Demonstrate expertise in operating and troubleshooting PEF systems.
• Collaborate effectively with research teams to develop and execute experimental plans.
• Maintain meticulous records of experimental procedures, data, and results, adhering to established data management protocols.
• Disseminate research findings through high-quality publications, conference presentations, and reports for funding agencies.
• Independently plan and conduct complex experiments with minimal supervision.
• Summarize and report research findings effectively on a regular basis (weekly, monthly, quarterly, annually).
• Actively contribute to the overall scientific progress of the research group, including mentoring junior researchers and fostering a collaborative and productive work environment.

Leadership & Mentorship (35%)

• Operate and maintain laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
• Supervise, mentor, and train undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and research staff.
• Lead and manage discrete components of larger research projects under the guidance of senior researchers.
• Analyze and interpret research data, identify discrepancies, and propose solutions to improve experimental outcomes.
• Critically evaluate existing research methodologies and recommend improvements for enhanced efficiency and quality.
• Contribute to the preparation of research proposals, reports, and grant applications.
• Assist with teaching activities as needed.

Other Duties as Assigned (5%)

• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Ensuring laboratory safety by adhering to established protocols.
• Managing laboratory supplies and ordering reagents.
• Coordinating visits with industry representatives.
• Presenting research to industry stakeholders and grant agencies.
• Contributing to the safe disposal of biohazardous waste.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

● Highly motivated team player with a strong work ethic and meticulous attention to detail, demonstrated by the ability to maintain accurate and reproducible laboratory records and manage research data following established protocols.
● Proficient in laboratory instrumentation, data acquisition, and analysis, with a critical eye towards consistency, reproducibility, and the scientific method to ensure the acquisition of accurate and reliable data.
● Scientific writing skills demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications.
● Excellent communication, interpersonal, and mentoring skills to effectively present research results (e.g., in meetings, conferences, seminars) and foster a collaborative research environment.
● Strong project management and time management skills, with the proven ability to oversee multiple research initiatives simultaneously.
● Advocate for safety and ethics in the workplace.

● Flexible and eager to take on additional responsibilities as required by the research group.

Minimum Qualifications:

Requires a minimum of a Ph.D. degree from a research institution in Chemistry, Biology, Engineering or equivalent terminal degree in a relevant discipline, with a minimum of 2 years postdoctoral experience (or equivalent research experience) with a demonstrated record of research productivity.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Expertise to design, conduct, and analyze PEF experiments in relevant research areas such as barley, dairy, and biomass processing.
• Experience developing and delivering training programs for junior researchers and students.
• Knowledge in preparing detailed reports, research proposals, and documentation for funding agencies.
• Familiarity with grant writing, budgeting, and financial oversight of research projects.
• History of working in a multidisciplinary research environment.

Salary and Benefits:
 
Salary range is $65,000 to $75,000 annually and is commensurate with experience. Boise State University provides a best-in-class benefits package, including (but not limited to):
