The Student Involvement and Leadership Center creates opportunities for students to explore purpose, build meaningful connections, and develop the capacity to lead. Our work includes leadership development, advising and support for student organizations, fraternities and sororities, student media, and student government, service and civic engagement programs, and campus activities. As Boise State continues to grow and evolve, our department is experiencing exciting renewal and organizational growth. Job Summary/ Purpose:

The Assistant Director for Student Engagement provides strategic leadership for initiatives that foster community, leadership development, service, and campus connection for Boise State students. This position oversees the development and implementation of campus programs, service and civic engagement opportunities, and integrated marketing and communications strategies that support departmental and divisional goals. The role also supervises professional and student staff, manages budgets and operational processes, and uses assessment and data-informed practices to enhance program effectiveness and student experiences. Working collaboratively across campus and within the community, this position contributes to divisional strategy, innovation, and student success initiatives.

Essential Functions:

Student Activities Program Development, Advising, and Support

  • Lead the strategic development, implementation, and assessment of student engagement, service, volunteer, and civic engagement programs that foster belonging, leadership, and community connection for Boise State students.
  • Oversee the coordination and execution of signature campus initiatives, including Bronco Welcome, Campus Awards, and Homecoming.

Service, Volunteer, and Civic-engagement Program Development

  • Develops and maintains a comprehensive portfolio of service, volunteer, and civic engagement programs that connect students to the broader community.
  • Cultivates relationships with local, regional, and international partners to expand meaningful and reciprocal service opportunities.

Marketing and Communications Strategy & Management

  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight for departmental marketing and communications efforts, ensuring alignment with departmental and divisional goals.
  • Develop and execute integrated marketing and communications plans that promote programs, initiatives, and student engagement opportunities.
  • Ensure consistent branding, messaging, and voice across departmental programs, platforms, and materials. 
  • Utilize data, analytics, and assessment findings to evaluate program and marketing effectiveness and inform continuous improvement and strategic planning.
  • Supervise and provide direction to marketing staff, including project prioritization, campaign strategy, and professional development.

Administrative Functions

  • Oversee departmental operations, including budgeting, fiscal management, logistics, contract administration, and implementation of strategic initiatives.
  • Lead program assessment and evaluation efforts to support data-informed decision-making, program enhancement, and divisional consultation.

Staff Supervision

  • Supervise, coach, and evaluate professional and student staff while establishing clear expectations, responsibilities, and accountability measures.
  • Support student staff hiring, onboarding, training, retention, and cross-training efforts to build and sustain a collaborative, high-performing team.
  • Provide mentoring, support, and professional development opportunities to enhance employee growth, performance, and retention.

Department and Divisional Support

  • Serve on university and divisional committees, councils, and special initiatives as a departmental representative and subject-matter expert.
  • Contribute to departmental leadership, strategic planning, staff development, and divisional initiatives in support of the Student Involvement and Leadership Center mission.
  • Collaborate across departments and divisions to support institutional priorities, student success initiatives, and additional programs and events as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • The successful candidate is skilled in marketing, assessment, and data-informed decision-making, and can effectively develop and implement initiatives that enhance the student experience and support departmental goals. They are an experienced supervisor who fosters accountability, professional growth, and teamwork while building strong relationships across campus and within the broader community. The ideal candidate is adaptable, innovative, and student-centered, with a commitment to excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement in a dynamic university environment.
Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree and 5 years experience or equivalent including 1 year of managerial experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Leadership, Communications, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Progressive professional experience in student affairs, student engagement, leadership development, or campus programming within a higher education setting.
  • Experience planning and implementing large-scale campus events and student engagement initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining community partnerships and service-based programs.
  • Experience leading marketing and communications strategies, including digital marketing, branding, and campaign development.
  • Experience using a campus engagement platform such as CampusGroups, Engage, or similar.
  • Experience using SalesForce or similar CRM.
  • Knowledge of assessment practices, data analysis, and strategic planning within higher education or student affairs.
  • Experience managing budgets, contracts, and operational processes.
  • Demonstrated success supervising, mentoring, and developing professional and/or student staff.
  • Strong project management, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.
Salary and Benefits:
Salary for this role starts at $60,673.60 and depends upon experience. Boise State University provides a best-in-class benefits package, including (but not limited to):
