Housing & Residence Life (HRL) is a department that accommodates approximately 3,000 students and staff across 10 on-campus living communities, which include traditional residence halls, suite-style, and apartment-style housing options. Our department is dedicated to supporting the academic and personal success of our residents. As we continue to grow and evolve, we aim to serve a broad range of students from across the region, including those from rural areas and those who are the first in their families to attend college.

Regularly works on tasks that are varied and complex. Applies full range and job knowledge; frequently adapts procedures, techniques, tools, materials, and/or equipment to meet specialized needs; may serve as lead; performs broad and/or focused assignments under general supervision; originality and ingenuity are often required to help establish procedures in functional area; relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish assigned tasks.

60% of Time the Maintenance Craftsman, Senior must:

• Assists in the repair and maintenance of light commercial and/or multi-unit residential facilities.
• Climbs ladders, enters crawl spaces, and uses scaffolding in the performance of duties. 
• Lubricates, exchanges filters, flushes equipment, and performs various specific preventive maintenance as directed.
• Investigates reported deficiencies and services requests and then determines and delivers appropriate remediation within appropriate licensing and budgetary guidelines.
• Performs and assists repair of light furniture damages.
• Performs fire safety activities such as testing and maintenance of fire extinguishers and emergency signage and lights.
• Hangs banners, signage, and wall mounted items.
• Performs maintenance on window systems, including removal and installation.
• Performs minor electrical maintenance tasks by troubleshooting and replacing defective components in light fixtures, receptacles, switches, garbage disposals, kitchen exhaust fans, and ranges. Adjusts and installs a variety of residential and light commercial building hardware.
• Performs minor plumbing/mechanical maintenance tasks by troubleshooting and replacing defective components in plumbing fixtures, faucets, garbage disposals, exhaust fans, supply fans, and small circulating pumps and motors.
• Repairs drywall, paint surfaces, hard surface materials, various floor coverings, suspended ceilings systems and other general carpentry/maintenance related tasks under the direction of journey level skilled trades staff.
• Repair and services maintenance and custodial equipment.
• Moves, transports, stocks materials and tools necessary for the completion of tasks.
• Performs these duties in a safe and efficient manner.

35% of Time the Maintenance Craftsman, Senior must: 

• Completes residence hall and apartment unit maintenance turns in preparation for new residents and tenants.
• Completes work orders and TMA data entry logs daily.
• Assists with the organization of inventory/ shop supplies. These supplies may be stored locally in residential buildings, off site storage facilities, campus designated spaces, and the maintenance warehouse.
• Functions as a lead worker over other maintenance staff and assists with general related trade duties.
• Assist colleagues on multiple projects (this may include colleagues from other trades).
• Enforces all Boise State University safety and risk management policies and procedures; reports all accidents and injuries in a timely manner and identifies and corrects unsafe work conditions with management oversight.
• Attends training programs (classroom and virtual) as designated.
• Attend project and team meetings.
• Perform 24-hour on-call maintenance duties on a rotating basis with other Maintenance/Custodial Services Housing & Residence Life staff, including day, evening, holiday, and weekend shifts throughout the year.

5% of Time the Maintenance Craftsman, Senior must:

• Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor and Department leadership.

• Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance 
• Ability to inspect equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.
• Ability to apply a customer service orientated approach to all work performed, providing clear and professional communication as a forward facing representative of this department

• Good knowledge of: carpentry, plumbing, electrical and general building maintenance.
• Some knowledge of: HVAC and mechanical systems maintenance; building codes.
• Experience: performing skilled carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and building maintenance repair; using and maintaining tools and equipment normally associated with carpentry, mechanics, plumbing, and electrical work; reading blueprints and schematics.
• A valid Driver's License is required.

• Broad knowledge and experience in structural trades (plumbing, painting, flooring, carpentry) with a focus on mechanical equipment and machinery maintenance.
• Demonstrated ability to interact respectfully with residents and guests, ensuring privacy and discretion.
• Experience working collaboratively in teams to complete tasks and providing instruction to peers and seasonal staff.
• Eagerness to collaborate and share information with a variety of stakeholders.
• Strong customer service skills and ability to teach job-related tasks to colleagues.
• Strong commitment to safe working habits and flexibility in adapting to changing work demands and priorities

Incumbents may work in all weather conditions and move in and around confined spaces. These positions are maintenance oriented. When working under the supervision of a licensed journeyman in a respective trade area incumbents can be an apprentice in that specialty. These positions involve lifting and carrying items weighing approximately 90 pounds, bending, stooping, shoveling, and climbing ladders. This position involves driving and transporting materials to various job sites.
