Title: Carpenter
Position Purpose:
This position will execute all varieties of carpentry-related construction, maintenance, renovation, and repair projects on campus, using high quality carpentry skills.
This position may be considered “Essential Personnel” in the event that:
- An emergency occurs on the Bates campus or in the vicinity that would impact Bates
- Inclement weather forces the closing of campus
- Other emergency events deemed appropriate.

Job Duties:
- Coordinate all carpenter work with other building trades
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints
- Communicate well with all customers and understand their needs
- Make sketches of objects to be built in the carpenter shop and installed throughout the campus buildings
- Operate all carpenter related equipment
- Perform all carpentry related functions
- Complete work orders and PM (Preventive Maintenance) activities
- Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Trade school diploma or other carpentry credentials desired.
Experience
- 5 years of residential and/or commercial building experience.
- Ability to work with wood, metal, or materials necessary for fabrication, repair, and renovation of all buildings.
- Knowledge of tools, building supplies, and hardware associated with building trade.
- Computer experience and ability to understand CAD drafting uses and blueprints.
- Knowledge of roofing, concrete work, window, and door installation also desired.
Skills and Knowledge
- Basic math and computer skills.
- Ability to logically trouble-shoot equipment problems.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions in the conduct of the job.
- Establish and maintain working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and outside contacts.
- Ability to perform manual tasks requiring moderate physical strength.
- Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of interpersonal situations and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems. • Ability and willingness to work weekends, evenings, on-call and other non-traditional schedules.
