Job Summary: | The Network Engineer III is a senior-level technical position responsible for the design, implementation, operation, security, and reliability of the UWF enterprise campus networks. This advanced position plans and oversees the architecture and performance of wired and wireless LAN/WAN networks, enterprise VPNs, edge firewalls, and related network services. Duties include configuring, installing, and maintaining network hardware and services across the main campus and remote sites; managing network IP addressing and VLAN design; supporting and securing data center network infrastructure, power systems, and fiber plant; and administering core network services such as DHCP and RADIUS. The Network Engineer III also plays a key role in network security by implementing and monitoring access controls, firewalls, VPNs, and IDS/IPS systems, and participating as an active member of the ITS Security Team. In addition, this role provides advanced troubleshooting, problem resolution, and real-time support of major and critical systems, and could be expected to mentor and guide other network staff to ensure effective knowledge transfer and continuous improvement of network operations. |

Minimum Qualifications: | A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Networking, or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience, is required. Candidates must have at least four years of progressively responsible experience working in network engineering or network support roles, including experience managing multiple major and critical network systems. This position requires advanced, hands-on experience designing, configuring, installing, and maintaining complex enterprise network infrastructure such as wired LAN/WAN, wireless networks, VPNs, VLANs, and related security appliances. Applicants must also have experience supporting and securing network systems through tools such as firewalls, VPNs, and intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS). The Network Engineer III is expected to handle more advanced problem-solving, provide real-time support for critical systems, and train and mentor junior network staff. |
Position Qualifications: | The ideal candidate will have advanced knowledge of enterprise network design, installation, and maintenance best practices, and demonstrated experience with configuring and supporting enterprise-grade switches, routers, wireless access points, VoIP systems, and related equipment. Strong skills in network monitoring, troubleshooting, and analysis are essential, as is a deep understanding of network security principles, including the ability to monitor network activity, investigate anomalies, and respond to security incidents as needed. This position requires the ability to work independently with limited supervision, manage projects or processes, and resolve difficult or complex technical problems. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills are required, including the ability to clearly explain technical concepts and coach less experienced staff. |
Preferred Qualifications | Preferred qualifications include holding advanced industry certifications such as CCNP, CWNP, or a comparable credential. Experience designing, installing, and maintaining enterprise networks in a higher education or large-scale environment is highly desirable. Familiarity with structured cabling, physical layer standards, and related equipment such as UPS systems is a plus. Experience supporting remote sites and distributed network environments, as well as working closely with information security leadership to monitor network security and respond to incidents, is preferred. Demonstrated experience leading technical projects and mentoring or training other network engineers is also strongly desired. |
