Mater Private Hospital Townsville is looking for a Diabetes Nurse Educator to join the team. This casual role will be based at our Pimlico campus.

The Diabetes Nurse Educator is a Clinical Nurse who plans and implements a comprehensive diabetes service for the in-patients of MHSNQ, as well as out-patients from the community, as referred by GPs or Specialists.

The Diabetes Nurse Educator provides up-to-date education on diabetes and its management to members of nursing staff, as well as medical students and interns as requested by the Clinical School.

Salary range: Level 2 Nurse, $54.44 - $58.30 per hour + casual loading plus 11.5% superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900  + access to many staff benefits! 

What you’ll be doing

  • Provision of diabetes education and self-management skills to clients with all types of diabetes including Type 1, Type 2, Gestational and Pre-diabetes. This includes individual assessment, education and care planning and the provision of ongoing support and advocacy.
  • Participation in continuous quality improvement evaluating the service and making the necessary changes to improve the service and better meet the needs of clients (including review of protocols, clinical pathways and systems that support service delivery).
  • Work as member of a multidisciplinary team liaising with and providing feedback to the various health practitioners involved the care of the client to promote effective coordinated service delivery.
  • Participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of chronic disease management programs which support self-management.
  • Identify and assess high priority clients and coordinate referrals to diabetes related service providers and multidisciplinary educational programs.
  • Participate in client case management utilizing self-management, health education and health promotion principles and philosophy.
  • Develop and maintain clinical decision making, health coaching and advocacy roles to support clients living with diabetes.

About you

You will have current registration with AHPRA (Aust. Health Professional Regulation Authority) as Division 1 Registered Nurse. You will also meet the below criteria:

  • Post-graduate experience and qualification in Diabetes Education.
  • Credentialed with the Australian Diabetes Educators’ Association (ADEA) or working towards credentialed status.
  • Demonstrated ability to appropriately apply Diabetes knowledge to client education as appropriate.
  • Proven ability to manage a clinical caseload.
  • Proven ability to work both in a team and independently.
  • Proven verbal and written communication skills to write reports and communicate in a variety of settings.
  • Sound organisational skills, particularly an ability to set priorities and use time management strategies.
  • Preferred ability to provide education to other staff and students.
