Mater Health is seeking applications for a Director - Refugee and Multicultural Health Service to join us, covering leave from June/July 2025 until mid-January 2026. This full-time role is based at our South Brisbane campus.
Mater’s Refugee and Multicultural Health Service (MRMHS) makes a significant, positive and enduring impact on the way health and community care is delivered and accessed. This senior role leads a team of clinical and nonclinical staff across three clinical services, and oversees the Refugee Health Network Qld (RHNQ) and associated projects designed to promote equitable health outcomes and reduce systemic barriers for people from a migrant, refugee and asylum seeker background.
Salary: Commensurate with experience plus superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900 + access to many staff benefits!
What you’ll be doing
The position has a strategic focus, involving high level decision making with respect to securing funding, allocation of resources and policy. The Director works in close collaboration with Queensland Health and other State and Commonwealth Departments, peak bodies, primary health, the community sector and universities. The Director oversees the implementation of integrated models of care across primary, secondary and tertiary sectors to deliver sustainable, timely and effective services.
The role is also responsible for championing best practice community engagement and ensuring multicultural community voice is embedded in planning, implementation and evaluation. The Director provides key advice to Mater Executives on emerging needs and gaps, as well as opportunities in line with Mater’s strategic objectives. MRMHS supports Mater’s Mission to meet unmet need and its obligations in relation to key State policies and legislation including but not limited to the Human Rights Act 2019 (Qld), Queensland Multicultural Charter and the Qld Refugee Health and Wellbeing Policy and Action Plan (2022-2027).
About you
You will have tertiary level (degree) health professional qualification (medicine, allied health professional or nursing) and a current and full driver’s license. You will also meet the below criteria:
- Post-graduate management/research qualifications (or equivalent) – desirable
- Experience working at a senior management level within the refugee health sector, including primary, community or acute care.
- Proven leadership in change management to support the development and implementation of new and innovative integrated health care delivery models across primary, secondary and tertiary sectors.
- Demonstrated experience in management and leadership of multidisciplinary and multi-cultural teams.
- Experience of working with multicultural, refugee and asylum seeker background communities utilising a trauma informed framework.
- Demonstrated understanding of project and change management processes and ability to apply and measure these effectively to achieve outcomes.
- Highly developed community engagement skills in a complex multicultural context.
- Sound knowledge of the health care context, in particular the interface between acute and primary health care.
- Demonstrated political astuteness and understanding of complex healthcare organisations, critical systems and strategic thinking.
- Advanced knowledge and understanding of relevant policies, legislation, standards and requirements.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience of community engagement and co-design approaches.
- Track record of national and state-wide advocacy across acute, primary and community health care sectors to develop and embed new models of integrated refugee health service delivery.
- Demonstrated experience in research, policy development, publications, and evaluation across a range of primary health and community care settings.
- Evidence of successful grant tendering and budget management.
- Ability to work collaboratively and consult effectively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders in the design and development of models, programs, services, policies and initiatives.
- Demonstrated experience in utilising innovation and change to develop services in line with emerging healthcare needs and the ability to be resourceful and adaptable.
- High level cross-cultural communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience and ability to use information technology systems, tools and databases.
- Knowledge and appreciation of the philosophy and values of the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy and their expression in the delivery of health care.
- Lived experience and connection to community is highly regarded, people from migrant or refugee backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
