Mater Health and Mater Education are pleased to offer a unique training opportunity for a Neonatal Simulation Fellow in Neonatology

Mater recognises that whilst teaching is a key component of the role of a specialist, there is often limited formal education in this area. Mater is a leader in the area of team-based and technical skill simulation training and research, and is home to a state-of-the-art simulation centre, affiliated with the world-renowned Centre for Medical Simulation in Boston. 

Commencing on the 2 February 2026 until 31 January 2027, this unique role will enable one Senior Registrar to obtain formal qualifications in Health Professions Education during their training, whilst working as a junior specialist in a supported transition to consultant roster.

What you’ll be doing

The Neonatal Simulation Fellow is a position within Mater Health with some reporting to Mater Education. The simulation and education component of this role will involve multidisciplinary education utilising a wide variety of educational modalities with a heavy focus on simulation. The successful candidate will be provided with professional development support to obtain post graduate qualifications in health professions education. This includes participation in the Harvard affiliated Centre for Medical Simulation’s Simulation Instructor Course.

The clinical component of this role provides the opportunity to act as a junior neonatologist in the consultant roster with support and supervision from senior colleagues. 

Key accountabilities will include:

  • Liaise with and assist the Director of Neonatology with the provision of comprehensive neonatal services to the Mater Mothers' Hospital.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team in the provision of family-centred developmental care to babies in the Neonatal Critical Care Unit as well as to babies in other areas of the organisation, including in an outpatient setting
  • Provide clinical and service delivery leadership within the organisation
  • Participate in improvements in quality, safety, patient and family experience and efficiency
  • Support neonatal research
  • Liaise with and assist the Clinical Simulation Director to provide simulation and interdisciplinary education within Mater Education and neonatology

About you

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Registration as a medical practitioner without conditions, with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Completing or completed Neonatal Perinatal Medicine training with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians desirable
  • Other postgraduate qualifications in education desirable (including enrolled but not completed)
  • Experience in a tertiary neonatal unit at senior registrar or neonatal fellow level or equivalent
  • Knowledge of the functioning of a tertiary Neonatal/Perinatal Unit in a metropolitan teaching hospital
  • Up to date knowledge of Neonatal/Perinatal Medicine, of technical equipment used in Neonatal practice, and of contemporary best practice methods within Neonatal and Perinatal Medicine.
  • Experience in simulation education and in providing clinical education
